Some of you may recall a thread that ran last month detailing a guitar I made for a co-worker's kid:

    IMG_4999.JPG

The kid is a huge Metallica fan so I added Metallica graphics and have since dubbed it "The MetalliCaster"!

Here's the long drawn out saga of how it all came to be:

    http://www.strat-talk.com/threads/the-stratoparts-guitar-from-hell.454499/

And here he is playing it for the first time:

Anyway, his mom says he loves it, so that should be the end of the story, right?

    Well, there's just one incy-wincy teeny-weeny problem...

You see, a fellow Strat-Talker named @Believer7713 decided to be a good Samaritan and volunteered to fix the Seymour Duncan JB that came with the original donated guitar (the leads were cut down to nubs).

Well, @Believer7713 just informed me that the refurbished humbucker is on its way back ...so NOW what?

Here's the deal: I still have the donated Strat style body, which got me to "thinking" (a bad habit I developed early on in my misguided youth); "Perhaps I could do something with it"!

After all, the kid needs both a Strat and a Tele, right?

Anyway, I did some Internet searching and found a picture of a what is apparently a Squier Bullet Strat body and it has an uncanny resemblance to the one I have...

    My "Donated Leftover" body:

    IMG_5359.JPG

    The "Internet Picture" body:

    IMG_5350.JPG

The so-called "bathtub" routes look very similar, so I got to "thinking" again (a very dangerous pastime for me these days); "Perhaps I could take the refurbished pickup and the 'possibly-maybe-Squier' body and make something with them"!

    Hmmm...

Before I knew it I was on eBay looking for cheap-but-hopefully-good parts... and before I could stop myself I began pressing "Buy It Now" buttons!

    IMG_5361.JPG

Well, too late to turn back now, so I might as well tell you my half-baked plan...

To keep things as simple and as affordable as possible I decided to make this thing a single pickup, single volume control "Tom Delonge Strat" clone... something like this (but with a Sunburst finish of course):

    IMG_5353.JPG

So I got this Squier neck:

    Squier Strat b.JPG

Then I got this pickguard from "The Stratosphere":

    StratosShere Tom Delonge PG b.JPG

I also needed a 500k pot for the humbucker:

    500K Pot.jpg

Since I stole the saddles for the first MetalliCaster, I needed to to replace them as well:

    Saddles b.JPG

I managed to find a few knick-knacks in my misc pile as well - most importantly a tremolo arm (score!):

    IMG_5360.JPG

So the die is cast and the "MetalliCaster II Project" is on its way to infamy! ...now all that's left is the crying...

    Stay tuned brotha's and sista's!!!

Doh! I should have consulted you before going on my buying binge!

I'm still short the following items though:

    (6) Pickguard screws

    (1) Black tremolo bar tip

    (2) Pickup height adjustment screws and springs for the JB humbucker.

Misc wiring for pickups (preferably black and white).

I also downloaded a wiring diagram for the Tom Delonge Strat and it shows a .220k resistor and 680pf capacitor attached to the 500k pot.

    Wiring A.JPG
    Wiring B.JPG

I'm not sure why I need those but if you have them laying around it would also be appreciated.

    Thanks!

I don't think i have a trem bar tip, but out you could use a chrome colored one I think I have you covered.

The last cap and resistor is for a treble bleed kit to go on the volume pot. I think I can cover everything but that.

    Chrome is cool...

The bar is appropriately 3/16" thick:

    IMG_5363.JPG

...so if it will fit that size then, sure, why not?

    Thanks!

I was going to make a how to video of that repair but apparently didn't hit the record button on my camera (thinking I did) so I didn't get anything. I didn't realize it until I was about 3 minutes from being done either.

A couple more things came in... first the saddles:

    IMG_5566.JPG

    ... which were subsequently installed:

    IMG_5567.JPG
    IMG_5568.JPG

The neck also arrived later in the day:

    IMG_5569.JPG

It's not a perfect fit, so I have a little "massaging" to do to make it work, but I'm not too concerned about it.

I wasn't able to fully bolt it on, but here it is somewhat attached to the body:

    IMG_5571.JPG

I've got a busy weekend coming up so I can't do much until next week. Besides, I still have to wait for more parts to be delivered anyway...

@AxemanVR It's hard to see the serial number but it looks like it starts with CXS. If it does then it's an SE and was made in the AXL plant in China. They were considered to be the better of the plants that made the SE models. That is a really good neck.

That's okay, There are several misaligned holes in the body that I'll have to fill and redrill anyway, including:

    1) At least one neck screw

    2) Several pickguard screws

    3) The tremolo spring claw screws go in at an unusually sharp angle and interferes with the back cover if loosened too far, so the screw holes will also have to be filled and re-angled...
