Nice work Mouse!
I heard this the other day and while I've heard the song many times before, I never much paid attention to the guitar. This sort of falls into my category of: Songs you wouldn't think have cool guitar lines but do. I didn't worry too much about getting everything note perfect and instead learned the basic structure and improv'd the rhythm in the spirit (hopefully) of the original. Most of the song is a single vamp that you can alter with each pass.
Rock Steady - Aretha Franklin
Funky playing Mouse. You are super-bad. Wife loves Aretha, you have a new fan.
The tele sounds good with both pickups, really works
That the way...put the Mouse stamp on the song.
Your wife has good taste unlike us knuckle draggers with our low E chug music and solos that go bbbllpppppllllllweeeeeee.
I tried a few pickup combos and settled on the middle position as it was giving me that honk I wanted.
I always leave a trail of Mouse droppings on every song!
but, you're also developing your own style...the Mouse Method.
Seriously though, you are killing these funk tunes brother!
The funky Mouse is in the house. Great job.
Funk can be tough because the rhythm is not only played clean but pretty prominently so you have to pay attention to what you're doing or it gets fugly fast. You make it look easy here and it sounds great.
Oh yeah, gettin' down for sure...
Great tune, I always guessed Aretha had a more traditional approach than modern to her music. I am wrong, & have been missing-out it seems.
Nicely controlled effort their Mouse, with excellent production, mix & tone. That Telecaster sits so well with the tune too.
@CigBurn You're right about funk. It seems it's all in the right hand and staying in the groove the whole time. I just try to keep in motion the whole time but it's pretty easy to fall off the track. I'd rather duff notes with my left hand than have the right hand fall off the rhythm. I think I've gotten better at it since I started playing this stuff a couple of years ago but I've got a ways to go.
@sam_in_cali that gif doesn't get any less funny every time I see it. Damn I miss Chris Farley.
Sweet!!! I love this stuff too! Fantastic job as usual.
You are right that it's hard to keep that groove going constantly, especially with the 16th note rhythm and syncopation. Hit a bum note or chord? Mute the strings, but keep that groove going with the right hand!
I was good at this stuff a couple of years ago but I have fallen away from it since my duo. The closest we come to anything funk is Mustang Sally. My new band plays Long Train Running and we are going to do Uptown Funk, so I think I'll be brushing the dust off my funk chops. Use it or lose it .
I'm currently working on a couple of tunes that are a little more difficult for m. To try to clear my head a bit I took a break and did this simple 2 chord (mostly) song. This is more of that AM gold stuff that I love which takes be back to being a kid. I'm not even sure if the electric part is right but it seemed to fit.
Rock Me Gently - Andy Kim
Oh yeah! That's the summer stuff right there. Great job Mouse! Smells like Coppertone in here all of a sudden.
I havent heard that Andy Kim song since I was a kid.
Thanks @CigBurn @mjark @Rastus and @TheDuck. Yeah this stuff really takes me back which is why I love playing this type of music.
@mjark This isn't the original backing track but they do get it close. Looking at Wiki, the keys are by Michael Omartian (never heard of him)
Given the sad news this week of Tom Petty's death, I had to revisit one of his classic tunes. RIP to one of the greats.
I Need to Know - Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
That was great, @Mouse! Thanks for sharing, it seems I can't hear enough Tom Petty this week and this is another great song.
