Drag. Tubes aren't cheap.
it was only 100 bucks to retube. really not all that bad.
beats the hell out of retubing a triple rec. that can get expensive
You ain't kidding there my friend.
Triple Recs have more glass in them than almost any amp I can think of.
I no longer use them, but Mesa's build quality and customer service is second to none IMO.
I've owned several different Mesa Boogies. I once had a question about one of them so I emailed the company and a Tech called me back on my cell within the hour!
My favorite two were the Single Rec Solo 50 head, and of course the LoneStar Classic.
This was the Solo 50 Single Rec, basically plugged right in front and miked a 2x12 partially open back with a 57 set off axis of a Vintage 30. Just raw tracks....
Tasty funk! Maybe a little sizzly tone-wise to my ear, but I like the playing. Cool (#9th chords?) outro.
Spending $100 for tubes on the F-100 is worth every penny. I bet the amp just sings now, clean and mean.
I initially tried running the amp on just two tubes, and it sounded great; but Mesa recommendation is to run all four, and I have to agree that more tone is there with all four tubes. Just rotate the matched pairs around if you are concerned about tube wear and only using the 60 watt mode.
I find low volume in 100 watt mode quite pleasing.
