There are the obvious examples like power windows/mirrors/locks/seats and 4w disc brakes but what about improvements toward safety and longevity of the vehicle?

I believe (fwiw) that every new car should have automatic lighting/wipers/climate control and cruise control. All of the aforementioned can be controlled by a chip half the size of the nail on your pinky and costs next to nothing to take some of the brain load off of the driver that they can devote to their eyes and ears.

Also, could the manufacturers please over-engineer the mechanisms of the driver's door? The hinges/locks/windows/switches etc. take the most abuse over the service life of the vehicle. I know I open the rear doors of my car somewhere in the range of 30~50 times a year and that might be a stretch but the driver's door could get 10~20 a day and the abuse adds up quickly!

    C'mon, rant with me!:D

All low (as in ground clearance) cars should have airbags to lift them over ridiculously high speed bumps.
Hey people, we don't all drive SUVs:confused:

I agree about the automatic items although I hate cruise control, but there is more to these than just the controlling chip. Servos and actuators are the costly part.

I’ve had all of these features on the last few cars I’ve owned, they are fairly standard these days.

    .

All the electronics provide additional failure points (wires abrade and short, connectors corrode, additional electrical load on the battery/alternator) so manual window cranks and so on would make for a longer lasting vehicle. However, due to 'economies of scale', power windows and locks are cheaper than manual cranks. Manual trans vs automatic the same way, much more complex and less reliable but because there are so many made they are cheaper.

I want a simple key back not forced to use the key fob gizmos that are the size of gas station bathroom key keepers.

I have all of those things and whole lot more like heated/cooled leather, 3 zone c/c (in a sedan!) with a lumbar back rub mode, automated rear sunscreen and a ton of other useless toys in a Cadillac...from 04! Isn't it about time?:D

I hear ya, and love it. I'd want to have the power seats, and overall room in my '85 Delta 88 Royale transplanted to the "future car", as well as the general cruisability for that matter. My wife jokes that my big old Olds is the "living room on wheels".

I hate modern conveniences in cars, because they are failure prone.

Just like the Caddy. The back seat is a leather couch that has been used twice and once was a family funeral. Even my tilt/telescope wheel is electric and it sets itself by memory to my preset drive/exit positions. What could that level of tech even cost these days?

Nothing lasts forever. I've been my own wrench for 40+yrs with a solid electronic/mechanical background. Please, share your insights.

    Musically:

1.) USB charging port in vehicle that will accept USB end of cable from music device and/or phone.

2.) 3.5mm input jack input that will accept cable from music device/ phone.

3.) CD player. At last count, there were millions of quality CDs just waiting to be used in a vehicle. :whistling:

    I'm just an old guy
Sitting by the pot bellied stove remarking...
Drove from Novato to Minneapolis non stop(cruise?)
Drove from Anoka to Carsbad non stop towing a trailer with 4 Suzukis(cruise?)
Never had power windows(because I've repaired far too many)
Never had an automatic trans(because I've overhauled in excess of 3,000)

    Drove a Chevy van(230 6) 3spd column 400,000

    Drove an 55 Olds 88 (324 v8) 300,000[apparently I lied about the automatic trans]

    Drove a 61 Chevy fleeside pickup (283 v8) overdrive trans 250,000

    Current Tacoma v6 5spd 289,000

    I'm just an old guy

    Foo...
    Fire went out
    And
Cigar became too short to clench tween my dentures...
    Good Night

You sound like my old Dad. :D I remember that when any new gizmo came out, particularly when connected with cars (stuff like electric windows), he would look at it, sniff in a disapproving way & say "....something else to go wrong...".

All should be at least hybrids to be powered by electricity to improve the nearly toxic air in some cities.
