I like to copy the essence of a riff I like and try to build around it.
Not usually successfully but I enjoy the try.

Unless it’s a riff that’s absolutely necessary to a song I prefer to riff away on my own.

I can noodle away endlessly and play nothing, then I play something and copy it then I get distracted and play along with a commercial, then I remember a riff I played in high school, but I can't get it right then I look it up on you tube and rabbit hole on the 10 things wrong you do as a guitar player which leads to the riff that will change your life video but I can't wait for the guy to shut up and play that riff so I start noodling until I think of a riff to play for the name that riff thread and record it, then I go to bed. :whistling:;)

Well.... I play like me. How you may hear this guy or that guy in there but that’s how I play...

Like Miles said “It takes a long time you play like yourself.

I'm not really a note for note guy, more of a trying to capture a vibe sort. Usually that means copping some of the licks, but not getting bogged down in it.

Most of the time I go clean and meander. If I stumble onto something I will work it over and over until I think my muscle memory will be able to bring me back to it in a few weeks.

If it’s a wellknown piece of playing and I’m doing it for an audience I will copy it exactly.

Saw an interview with Michael Buble the other day where he quoted Tony Bennet's advice to him....

Copy everybody.... Copy one guy, it's plagiarism....Copy everybody, it's research.
