Play it how you hear it. That way, no one can ever accuse you of playing badly. All the correct notes, but not necessarily in the correct order.

With special thanks to Mr Eric Morcambe

    My house.
Unless Im having a fantastic night, I rarely like what I improvise more than a nfn solo.

We are starting to cover Purple Rain. I kinda fool around a bit on it. Prince plays a pretty weird, non standard solo I havent got down yet. Ill feel more comfortable doing that nfn.

it's just me, the only time I've ever tried to learn a cover was for the Euroguestock jam in London last March

I copy for the most part.
And for the most part, that's my downfall.
When I start riffing my own stuff, I generally play better than when trying to get inside another player's head.
I will never be Rory, Stevie Ray, Eric or Jimi, but I will always be me.

    Right behind you...
I'll play a solo note for note if it's essential to the song. Like Proud Mary. Anything else is just wrong. LOL

A lot of the things I play are in tribute to the original and I try to emulate the original

Other things I play are a combination of the original version and my own parts.

Then there are some things that I've never played the same way twice

Me too, I’ve got a covers band. Mainly older crowd wanting 60s 70s 80s stuff. But they want to hear them as they remember them, fresh and modern. I arrange them to keep the recognizable riffs and hooks but update them. I call them cartoons of the originals. Bit like Tom and Jerry. Everyone recognizes Jerry is a mouse, but he actually looks nothing like a mouse.

It depends, most solos don't need to be played exactly as. I when I'm screwing around at home I very rarely play songs unless I want to bring something to the band. However I have been fascinated by The Ocean the last couple of days. The band would love to do it but no one can sing it.

A little of both, more copying that playing.

And when I do copy I make it mine.
