I had always thought that Shoegaze/Shoegazing is some type of fetish. Today I found out it's actually a music genre....

Some of it is pretty good but I have to be in a mood for it. Believe it or not, there are sub-genres of Shoegaze, like blackgaze (black metal-y shoegaze, for example).

This is your typical shoegaze stuff:

This is more the stuff I was/am into...The vocals can be a bit harsh to the uninitiated but I can't recommend this album enough:

A lot of shoegaze reminds me of tv crime drama mood/outro music.

Yep, its seems to fit somewhere between ambient/soundscapes and depressing alt/pop music, ala The Cure, Jesus & Mary Chain, etc.
Just add loads of reverb, fuzz and delay :thumb:

It appears they ran out of good nicknames right after Heavy Metal...

It's in my nature to in these kind of situations try to find other accomplices. That makes it easier for me to not feel like a big dufus...

A dufus nevertheless but not alone! If I'm going down I'm taking someone with me!

I've heard of the genre but can't say I've listened to it. I imagined that the name came from the musicians standing on stage staring at their shoes as they played.

20+ years ago I helped a young kid get started playing. He later went on to work in several bands across the west coast. Talking to him one day he mentioned Math-Metal. I had not a clue what the hell he was going on about. I felt like what I would imagine my parents felt as I brought home Ozzy, Rush and the like.

That term 'math metal" always struck me as funny like some of the other metal sub-genre names (hair metal, goregrind, melodic death metal, etc,..). I mean, nobody is using actual math to create it...its just using odd time signatures to create a rhythm/groove.

I always thought music was music

  19. I always thought the term referred more to an onstage behaviour rather than any actual genre of music. Just like indie meant music released on an independent label.

When I see bands gazing at their shoes, it's usually extremely boring. If you're not excited and upbeat about the prospect of taking to the stage to showcase your creativity in front of a hopefully appreciative crowd, well, what's wrong with you? This is your time to shine. Lift your head and look at these poor suckers who've paid to see you!

Umm, rant over. Just saying. :D:p:whistling:
