Well, seein as I have a new player series I'd go for the '72 ri. And it's already black
Why - Newer and well reviewed American Tele. Good single coil pickups.
Love my special. Neck feels superb. Stock pups sound fine, but are easy to replace if you want a different sound. Easy to play.
This. 100 times this.
Play them both. Pick the one you like.
I have a couple of Teles but I don't have a 72. I'm getting GAS...
There, there, there...
I took a mate out the other day to buy his first electric guitar, and of all the cheapies, this one played the best - https://www.gak.co.uk/en/squier-vin...Vg9KyCh1mKQQJEAkYASABEgJ-EPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
£300 for a Tele custom is a lot of guitar for the money, and the neck was really nice.
Play’m! Pick the one you like best!
I bought a Classic Vibe a few months ago, it beat a couple of Fenders off with ease, I had folding beer vouchers left over too.
I'd buy the new one.
Because I don't like black.
Mate, you need to go play them. Simple.

My vote is the special and I dislike them a lot.
I like the special but the most important thing is which one do YOU like? Get the one that gives you the biggest erection and you can't go wrong.
In this case , I'm a purist and a sucker for a blonde.
If you like them about equally, enough to have a dilemma, I would go for the newer one. Chances are the older one has 20 years of wear on the frets and other bits.
Consider building your own. I don't own actual Fenders, just parts. Warmoth makes excellent bodies and necks.
