That's exactly what I would have done if it had allowed me to do so. It's because it isn't possible that this thread started.......

Exactly, you got it in one my friend. That's precisely the "Groundhog Day" scenario that killed my previous laptop.

Thanks. I'll look into this. Of course it doesn't help that entry level laptops tend to not have a DVD drive any more! Luckily the new laptop had no problem reading my external USB plug-in drive, which made loading some software easier. But the buggered laptop won't read anything, so that's not an option.

But yes, thanks for asking, the new HP laptop set up very easily & (touch wood!) seems to be fine. And, bearing in mind what laptops used to cost a few years ago, £250 does seem like a reasonable price to pay for it.

W10 update is wreaking havoc with my Dell all in one. First, my printer is no longer compatible. Tried to look for drivers, but Canon says it doesnt have a compatible driver available.

Now my start button wont work. Im going to try reinstalling drivers, and Norton AV.

    Seems like Windows OS upgrade/
    Updates always causes driver issues.

    What a PITA!

Windows 10 installation: install from USB pen drive, get essential security updates only, then grab the latest version of DWS (Destroy Windows Spying) from Githb: https://github.com/Nummer/Destroy-Windows-10-Spying/releases

    This lets you:

    1. Kill UAC
    2. Kill windows updates process entirely
    3. Disable Cortana
    4. Completely and utterly uninstall all the windows 'experience' junk
    5. Insert a bazillion blocks in your hosts file to effectively kill all Windows spying/remote data harvesting

Best of all its 100% free, modular and is point n click.

This in conjunction with a decent SSD will hotrod the bejeezus out of most home PC's.

I feel bad for y’all having to jump through these hoops. It’s like being in an abusive relationship.

The last I read, Windows 10 ignored the hosts file to call home. I have Microsoft and all it's little fiends blocked outside the Windows box, it can shout as loud as it likes, nobody can hear it.

    Not a bug; “undocumented feature.”

Now that Github is owned by Microsoft, I wonder how long this sort of stuff will be available there?

I'm afraid there's far too much jargon in this post for me to be able to understand it. What's a UAC? And what's a pen drive? And what's an SSD?

Apart from anyghing else, I don't understand how I can install Windows 10 from a pen drive (?) when it's already installed. o_O

Can anyone translate all this stuff into English for me please?

It means my Windows computer is connected to the internet via a Linux computer acting as a firewall. All sites Micros**t are blocked. :)

I think that you were one of people who commented earlier that this suggestion was of no help to me.

Sorry I was just explaining my reply to @BlurgyWurgyWibble'. Have you had any luck with fixing the wayward Windows update?

Quite a few over at TDPRI are having trouble with the latest update, from killing the sound to killing the computer...

It kills everything else about your computer apparently, why not tone?
