Cool! I did the same steel wool treatment on a similar sunburst Tele. I didn't want to make it full on matte, but as it looks like you did, I just wanted to knock down the shine a little. Mine got noticably smoother, and didn't stick to my arms as much when I played.

Well I completely futzed up the electronics. It ain't working right, so it looks like I get to remove the neck to get at the pick guard without replacing the strings. Good times.

I may just get one of those Guitarfetish alninco pre-loaded guards and call it a day, but I'm annoyed that it's not working right and want to figure out what I got wrong.

Brotip: loosen the strings to relieve the tension then carefully remove the neck. The strings will still be attached at the tuners and at the bridge so be extra careful not to kink them.

What's not working with the electric bits? If you can get a picture, I know that someone here will be able to spot a problem.

In regards to the Cooper foil shielding, it has to be connected to ground or it won't be effective.
It actually attracts noise and hum, and then sends it to ground (where you won't hear it).

Volume is stuck on like 10 and volume knob does nothing Not sure tone pots are doing anything either.

I'm new to wiring and soldering so I did a poor job of both I'm sure. I tried to follow a diagram. Pretty sure I attempted to get them connected to the right places but whether or not they are connected well is another story. :D

Pre-loaded pick guards are the way to go. :D

Good to know about the shielding. It should be easy enough to run an extra wire to ground somewhere.

I burned up a couple pots my first time wiring a guitar. They're surprisingly easy to screw up when using a hot chunk of metal to melt other metal. Soldering takes a bit of practice to get right, and takes up keep to maintain the skill.

I had no idea you could burn pots. More than likely that is what I did.

Yes I was lucky my volume pot did not burn up when I connected the out put jack ground wire to it.I backed off the soldering iron when I saw it start to discolor, all was well.

Dumb question - is there a difference between volume and tone pots? I have an extra tone pot laying around.

There's A and B pots, A for audio taper which Fender uses mostly on all pots...volume and tone....then there's B for linear taper which Gibson uses on tone pots.....

    I prefer the A....A250K for a 250k pot, A500K for a 500k pot...

    Cool thanks.

Just noticed I didn't ground the 3rd prong on the volume pot. Trying that now.
