Hi, forgive me if I'm telling you something you already know and have done.I've noticed that HB makers like Duncan use the same direction wind for both coils and ground the start of one and use the start of the other as hot.I don't know if thats to balance the flavor or just easier. But as w Strat p/ups if you use the start as hot you get a darker sound.I've made HBs by taking a normal HB apart and flipping one coil so one coil is then reverse wound.Again grounding the start, but having the finish of the second coil as hot.Its much clearer sounding w better highs. Thanks for your posts ,Terry

Oh, I didn't know you had replied. The Spinning disk idea sounds good. Did you mean that you used to believe what Bill Lawrence believes, or someone else? I'm pretty sure Bill is the one to go to for info on PUP's. His knowledge is bottomless, and his experience in the field is boundless. As an example, his proprietary testing equipment is so sensitive that Elektrosolar chose to use him to test their new silver pickup wire.

People say they just "use their ears" to judge a PUP without even knowing how to alter the resonance, or what to listen for. FI, if you haven't trained yourself to listen to what's happening in the first 100ms of the attack, you won't really notice it, but your brain will register it and it may trigger an unpleasant response over time. Furthermore, unless they incorporate certain construction methods, most pickups suffer from random eddy-current induced phase-cancellations. How many of us can listen to a PUP and say "it sounds nice, but there's a 6dB notch at 2.7kHz, a 10dB notch at 4.1kHz, etc."? None! Thats how many. : )

Given the choice between a PUP with random notches, mid/bass masking, decreased efficiency and a pickup without those drawbacks for the same price, which would you want? How can someone think that a man who improved his cheap violins as a child, was a European jazz guitar sensation by age 17, co-founded Framus guitars in the 50's, was the first after-market PUP designer in the 60's, chief engineer for Gibson in the 70's with numerous innovations like the L6, Ripper and Grabber basses, OBL, SCN and Wilde Pickups, and has multiple patents to his name would not know how to voice a PUP?!

Most guitar players are a stubborn, fearful, even superstitious bunch who claim to be rebellious, progressive risk-takers. Isn't it odd that an 81 year old man is more forward thinking than the majority of young players. No big surprise Bill's L6 didn't really catch on. It was way ahead of it's time. OK, my rant is done. Take care, man. Keep doing the good work that you do.

Hey, cool idea about testing the signal of an air coil with the magnet above the string. Even cooler that you sell your PUP's at the prices you do. Check Bill Lawrence's data on PUP materials here:

My guess is that the PUP with a magnet in the core will have a much higher output. You could use a software oscilloscope if you have an A/I and a PC. There should be plenty of apps like that about. Rather than a plucking device, you could use an e-bow. Maybe you can test the proximity theory by trying the PUP at different heights?

OK, so far. Been two days and I have had 80 or so new views on my site. No sales in two days, but hey, it's getting my name out. You have a site?
