"Tone is in the hands" part 2

I can’t explain to you how much this resonates with me! Recently I seem to be (or maybe it’s just me) seeing an upsurge in the discussion of pointless c**p which is usually along the lines of ‘I really can’t see the point in XXXXX, educate me’ or what I’d consider threads that can at best be...

"Tone is in the hands" part 2

If tone is in the hands, why do I sound terrible when my electric isn’t plugged in? :) I think ‘tone’ is in your gear. Nuance, and the things that get your music/playing recognised when one hears it (bends, vibrato etc) is in the fingers yes, but your signal chain also plays a part in that. So...

So what’s the count up to?

The judicious use of smilies can quite often defuse any comments that are open to several layers of interpretation. :)

Thoughts on low vs high action on strats changing with age

Gotta be low low low! Neck at 0.004” relief, and action at at least 1.5mm at the 12th. I get buzzing if I hit hard, so I don’t hit hard - which to me seems to be the most common-sense approach…

Inexpensive overdrive pedals for tube amps

Do you have a budget in mind? I confess I’ve not tried Many of the cheaper ODs, but the one that I DID have luck with is the Joyo BluesMood. Very much based on a Keeley Modified Blues Driver, and sounded epic pretty much where-ever I set it. Word of caution though, its not quite transparent...

Inexpensive overdrive pedals for tube amps

I don’t know, are you? You’re the one trying to pick holes in my advice. Would it have been so difficult to to read my recommendations without having to comment?

Inexpensive overdrive pedals for tube amps

Oh wind your neck in! The word “Inexpensive” doesn’t appear on his original post, only in yours. Others have suggested the Tumnus, why single mine out? I’ve suggested pedals others have suggested, and all those listed in my thread can be had on the s/h market for less than $100. In any case...

Inexpensive overdrive pedals for tube amps

MXR Micro Booster pedal is excellent, also features an internal trim pot to vary the gain, or to act as a clean(ish) boost. The MXR Timmy is also meant to be a clean transparent Od. I didn’t particularly like mine so I sold it, but others seem to get on well with it Wampler Tumnus also gets a...

    What was your first electric?

Squier Strat. Black with white pick-guard. By the time I’d sold it, I’d fitted a Kahler Spyder, locking top nut, and some di-marzio humbucker.

    Why do they answer???

I used to talk to my cat, Pixel, all the time. He used to talk back. It was lovely. Fun car fact - when a car comes over to you and raises his/her tail, it’s actually ‘waving hello’ at you
