Calling All Guitar Adjusters: What was your game changer?

For me, it was about 1962.... I was 16, and had been hounding my Dad tio get me a "real" guitar instead of the Silvertones he got from Sears at a discount. He worked there and Management got a steel cut on the price... I had already been getting pretty good at setting up the guitars of the day...

Adding weight to balance the guitar?

Just a side note. . . when looking for very light bodies.. the most oft seen contender is a Paulownia body.. they are great with this caveat, certain areas MUST be reenforced or what you're building is a "time bomb" ticking down to ultimate failure.. All must have the neck mount holes...

    What makes a good Sunburst?

Now.. see.. THAT happens to be the very sunburst I prefer most.. which means nothing other than I like what someone doesn't ... other than that.. nothing.. r

    What makes a good Sunburst?

and what if the guitar plays like Heaven, but has the wrong 'burst?? Consider SRV's #1 ... is THAT the right 'burst... if SRV had never accomplished what he did.. and ya saw that guitar hanging in a shop.. you'd probably pass her by..

    What makes a good Sunburst?

well I see we have 5 pages of posts of "good sunbursts"... but... if ya don't like a sunburst that someone has proudly posted as their idea of "good". then it's not to at least one guy, it's just not good.. point is.. ya don't need someone else's idea of what's good.. You need only choose one...

Adding weight to balance the guitar?

take some of the tape weights used to balance motorcar wheels... tape a few in the electronics cavity under the pots.. there isn't though room under the switch... do a rough assembly and test the balance... as an alternative, you can use lead rat shot.. it's a fine grade gun shot that may be...

    What makes a good Sunburst?

Now there's an idea... Remember what your sunburst looks like has zero impact on how your guitar sounds...

    Stratocaster-neck question

I agree wholeheartedly.. since NO ONE ever auditions an altered guitar in a truly blind situation, no one ever knows if they actually did anything.. "YOU" cannot make mods to "your" guitar.. then listen to get an honest impression.. not because you're dishonest.. it's because that's just the...

    Stratocaster-neck question

Here's the problem... First you "stack the deck". Your description of the instrument cannot help but to establish a negative bias reguarding the guitar... thus considering the second part of that sentence, I'd say forget completely the first half, and enjoy what so many are looking for, a great...

Did Fender offer any nitro-finished Strats outside of AVRI in the late 90s?

yeah,, there exists a water born, catalytically hardened Nitro . . . no kidding.. whatever it is, i rather doubt it plays by any rules suggesting normalcy.

Did Fender offer any nitro-finished Strats outside of AVRI in the late 90s?

I've never encountered a Fender product, with their interpretation of Nitro, that didn;t dissolve almost instantly as compared to guitars done with Mohawk, Behlens, Sherwin Williams, Cabot's .. etc.. they take a while to dissolve, Possibly, it's been refinished.. r

Did Fender offer any nitro-finished Strats outside of AVRI in the late 90s?

Sorry I was answering the query posed by the title, "Did Fender offer any nitro-finished Strats outside of AVRI in the late 90s?" perhaps that's no longer allowed... I guess I didn't get the memo..

Did Fender offer any nitro-finished Strats outside of AVRI in the late 90s?

In the early 90's the "forums" concept wasn't as ubiquitous as it is today, Thus we didn't know all the "stuff" that was making us sound like ourselves... it wasn't until the late 90's that we found out that by painting our squires with Nitro, all of a sudden we'd sound like Beck.. By the early...

I'm going to oil finish my Eric Clapton signature neck.

It'll be fine for any painted surface, but if your fingerboard is any open-grain wood.. like Rosewood.. I wouldn't apply it.. it MAY be OK, but i haven't used it.. some waxes turn whitish as they get old.. so that could be a problem.. thus I stay away from applying them ot any open grain...

I'm going to oil finish my Eric Clapton signature neck.

warm each fret with a soldering iron, or a laundry Iron.. that softens the old urethane, making it release from the fret .. while not perfect, it will reduce the areas that may need attention as you procede.

I'm going to oil finish my Eric Clapton signature neck.

Yes!! Believe me.. unless you have substantial experience refinishing guitars you will screw it up big time. The only thing I would do is give it a good wax job with something like MinWax finishing paste wax...

I'm going to oil finish my Eric Clapton signature neck.

I got my first Strat in 1962.. it was a well worn 1957... back then no one wanted the "relic" look.. so it set about refinishing it.... I stripped the lacquer from the neck...and found out that in 1962 the technology wasn't redilly available that could help you remove the nasty fingering marks...
