    hi all,

    fade/paint question...

how could i get a standard shell pink finish to look like the peach hued one? Maybe sunlight exposure or a hair dryer?

I shared photos of the standard shell pink finish and the peach hue so you can see.

    best,
    jake

It would take a lot of sunlight exposure. If you want a different color, may be best just to refinish it to the color you really want.

It will eventually yellow, but that takes awhile.

but the lighting in the room will make as much or more difference to the color as yellowing for 20 years on a poly finish.

    Hi, @elgueroloco

The peach hued one looks like might be nitro lacquer finish with faded nitro clear coat.

    Easy.
Just fill your bathtub with coffee and soak the guitar in it for a day or so.

    Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

I’m sure you could apply a thin clear coat, lacquer, or epoxy finish; adding a small amount of (yellow?) pigment. But that sounds really messy. And you would need to test it first under the pick guard or in the back cavity. I don’t think it’s worth the effort unless your looking for a project.

Lol i’ll be sure to try the coffee.

I don’t currently have a shell pink strat, but that peach caught my eye...I wanted to see what I could do.

I think you’re right...they’re both ‘shell pink.’ But it must be the faded nitro clear coat...time for me to read more about paint finish mumbo jumbo like the nerd I am. Thanks for your help.

Just to clarify the term, the lacquer finish, clear coat, does not fade it yellows and this changes the appearance of the base color.

Dave Simpson’s YouTube channel has some detailed info on stripping poly finishes, but it looks like a pain in the a$$.

It will yellow with exposure to sunlight. Even with a poly finish. Hang it on a wall in a bright room for a year and you'll see a good difference. That maple neck will go dark too.

My poly American Standard got dark after I hung it on the wall. It wasn't my intention but I noticed it after a few months.

The neck on this guitar looked like yours when I bought it. And Vintage White is not this yellow when it’s new.
