Hi
Looking at buying this 1987/8 G- ser number Squier Silver Series Strat.
Almost all Squier history states that Siver Series started around 1990.
What have we got here then? Any explanations? To my eye this looks legit.

Owner has had it 30years no mods, no stories, so why the SS logo?
Has anyone seen an earlier SS than this?

This one is from Tony Bacon & Paul Day's 'The Fender Book':

"Fender Japan have confirmed evidence that certain series have been used beyond the production spans listed above (table on page 93), in particular the A-, C-, G- prefixed numbers. This underlines the need for caution when dating using serial numbers."

The A serial number is a way more well known example compared to the G serial.

This guitar is a Silver Series (model SST-33) and not made before 1990.

Have you looked at fuzzfaced or Alston family websites?
They are a massive trove of information
@balston11
@Antonio77
The second tag may not be correct,

As @Tamarindo03 said, the list of Japanse serial number you usually find on many sites is not 100% accurate, and many sites made a copy and paste job.
For example, I have a K guitar made in 1992 (date written on the neck heel and model made in 1992 only). @balston11 showed me a 1989 E guitar. And I saw many other Stratocasters made in Japan with serial numbers and dates that differs from the serial number list usually shown.
I tried to make that list better, altough there could still be some discrepancies:

Regading the guitar, G serial number was used until 1990, so it fits perfectly the history of the Silver Series.

Right now , it’s good, value <£300, but there are MIJ /CIJ. lefties at £600 as the market ( although rarer ) is so much less.
So, buy Squier SS or Fender Japan ?
I know what I want pay, the market will decide if that’s enough

Sold for £245 .. good price for one of the earliest Silver Series, looked a tidy guitar, I just didn’t have the enthusiasm in the end to get “ another Strat” 😀

Well, in my first post I added some photos.
One of them shows a closeup of the Squier headstock.
Have a look at that and see if you can see a number… that’s where the heck it is .
