Always loved the guitar on Natalie Merchant's Carnival (and the entire Tigerlily album). And, yes, I always assumed it was some dude playing a Strat, sitting on a stool next to a Tweed.

Heard the song rotate driving today and I finally decided to look up what amp "he" was playing. Well, I never did find out what amp was used, but I did discover I'm a sexist pig. Jennifer Turner did the guitar on the studio version of the song and toured for a while with Merchant before going her own way.

She is my new guitar hero.

Don't know about the studio version, but I spy a Marshall behind the guitarist in the video.

Assuming that it was a guy playing is not the least bit sexist. Let’s not let the social justice warriors tell us that everything we think is wrong.

There are 50 male guitarist to every one female, and it’s not because they’re not as good or because no one let’s them play guitar. It’s not even that it’s not encouraged from a young age. It’s more that they simple aren’t as interested in guitar as boys tend to be. There are measurable preferences for both sexes. :)

I guess you could say you were pleasantly surprised that it was a female guitarist! :)

If you said... "there's no way a woman could play that" you would be a sexist.
Just assuming a guy played it...?
    I don't think that qualifies.

Assumption rarely ends up where you thought it would.

    Food for thought.

It still is, a little bit. Our assumptions about what different jobs men and women do are often grounded in systemic sexist norms. We're all prone to it - hopefully younger generations less so.
Are there worse instances of sexism? Absolutely. I probably would have assumed it was a man, too.

Now I have to go back and listen to that song. I haven't listened to the full album in ages...

It's actually uncommon to be the player on tour and in the studio.
Many times the touring band is completely different from the studio band.
She was fortunate (deservedly so) to land both gigs.

I'm certainly not being argumentative here, nor do I support sexism, but I think it's ok for men and women to be different.
There are differences, we should be thankful for that and celebrate it.

Feminism is not about wanting everyone to be the same. It's about not wanting one sex to be given more value/rights/power than the other.

...or about anyone being told they can't do or like something because of their sex (biological impossibility aside).

    Being different...and being treated differently.

    There's the distinction.

Yes. I understand that. I think though that oftentimes, people get the two things confused.
    Both sexes are equally important.
Without women, there's no human race.
Without men, there's no human race.
It can all be boiled down to that.

Do I value my daughter less than my son? I couldn't even imagine that line of thinking.
Do I think they are both equally good at all things? No.

But their abilities are not down to their sex, rather to their individuality - their individual strengths and weaknesses. There are differences in average physical size and strength of men and women, of course, but that's about it.
