Is 4 ply the standard for a strat, of course, tortoise pickguard? It seems like the other colors are 3 ply.

welcome to the party.. put the beer in the fridge and plug in..

The original Tort Pickguards were 3 ply... today there is available an improved version that's 4 ply, its usually real Celluloid too..

I'm not sure what the historical standard is, but I really like that extra layer of white on the 4ply. By comparison the 3 ply looks cheap & cheesy IMO.

I wish I could find 4 ply black more places.

I have over the years accumulated way to many different pickguards. White, mint, parchment, black, tortoise, moto, aged moto. Strats, teles, thineline tele. Other than single layer Black, White, like Tele or Stat intially had the multi layers seem somewhat consistant.
The thing I have noticed is solid colors seem to be x/y/x where x is top color, y is the sandwich color, and then the repeat of the top color. Ergo Black/White/Black, White/Black/White. The ones that have an "exotic" look like Moto, tortoise or other designs seem to be 4 layers or plys.

The other thing that influences how they look is the depth or angle of the bevel. The wider bevel leaves more contrast with the pinstripe effect of the edge.

All the factory tortoise pickguards on Strats that I have seen are 4 ply.
