I thought some of you may be interested to know that the 82' Fullerton Re-issue with the 'Dad' relic that I purchased 3 weeks ago is heading to the USA tomorrow to be worked on by Matt at MJT guitars.

The original thread that I posted about this guitar for anyone interested is below.

I decided to get MJT to improve the amateur relic that was done by the original owners dad a few years back.

The guitar currently looks like this.

After taking all of the hardware of the body it looks like this.

I've asked Matt at MJT to basically take a Fender Custom Shop relic approach to the body and to work on improving the amateur relic that was done.

There will be no refinishing at this stage, I expect just sanding, blending edges and buffing.

Based on research I've asked MJT to try and head in the direction of these Custom Shop Relic examples below.

I'm keen to see how this one turns out.

In any case it certainly wont be any worse that the way it currently is.

I'll post images of the finished product as soon as I have them.

Cheers :thumb:

It makes me wonder WTF people are thinking when they do stuff like this to a perfectly good guitar.

Custom shop relicing is one thing, but these crappy homemade relic jobs are usually really bad.

I hope MJT can improve your guitar for you.

a friend of mine destroyed a perfect late 90s pewter clapton strat that he inherited from his dad.

I wish I saved the pic he texted me of it after "relicing"

Since you're going to so much effort on the visuals are you planning on swapping the pick guard too?

The current example is way too white and really wants to be a nice aged mint green. It's also a chance to change the screw pattern to '63 and on to match the '63 12th fret dot spacing. The body already has the extra screw hole providing for the fitting of both pre and post '63 guards

Just a thought while you're making other changes.

PS. I'd get them to take it easy on relicing the upper (treble) horn.... who gets wear there in the real world?

Yep, you're not wrong mate.

I think in this case the dad had very little idea of what he was doing and how historic this guitar is (i.e. an 82' Fullerton reissue).

He just thought it would cool to relic it.

I'm pretty sure that Matt at MJT will do the best they can to perform a 'relic rescue' on this one.

I do. I carry my strats by the upper horn.

I have seen a couple of pro relics that looked good. Not sure if I saw it here but it was a solid color over a burst. Something Fender might have done back in the day for whatever reason. Almost want to say it was an MJT pro job and only showing through on the body where the forearm rests.

Update on the project......

Well the body was packed up and shipped off to MJT in Missouri last month and I just received a couple of photos from Matt at MJT to show how the the body is looking after the minor reshaping and light sanding to improve on the 'dad' relic.

Below are a few photos from the original ad that the seller posted on Gumtree before I bought the guitar.

Essentially the 'Dad' relic was rough and unsightly.

Hopefully you can see the subtle difference that MJT have already achieved.

MJT's task was to improve the overall look of the relic by reshaping, sanding and buffing.

There will be no additional painting. Just reshaping, sanding and buffing.

The next stage will be to age the bare wood and make the grain darker.

The guitar that MJT are matching is below;

I'm looking forward to seeing how the next stage comes up :thumb:

Should be able to post another update in a week or so.

In your first images of the guitar at the start of this thread, the forearm wear looks much bigger than in the Gumtree pictures. Did you take some sandpaper to it as well?

Yep....

I couldn't help myself.

No sure if Im' kicking myself or not but I'm sure after the ageing is finished it will be looking good.
