Don't look past the fender champion 40. It's only $180ish new, 12" speaker, lightweight and loud enough for most applications. It's a modeler, but crazy simple to control, you don't need a computer and all that crap.

Well if you are shopping used gear look for an older Peavey Bandit

Yes I have one. They are the precursor to the the Mustangs. They sound great.

Mustangs are more readily available now, and more "traditional" wiyhout the little screen on it.

I have gdec and mustang, equally good sound.

I just got a used Roland Cube 30 for $75. I think it sounds great! The onboard phaser will get you that Lynrd Skynrd sound from "Second Helping" too.

At 30 watts you are getting into something you might gig with if the other guys are not too loud. It is easy to use, too, no menus, just knobs.

I second the fender super champ XD. You might have to wait awhile for the right price but they're always on eBay.

To be honest, so have been completely obsessed with the SC X2 lately. It seems like an absolutely ton of value for the money and has a huge range of sounds. I am seriously considering that amp for myself.

The Fender Superchamp X2 seems very nice but it's too big and way too expensive... I'm talking about 150-200$ here and I can't find any used one at that price where I live.

wanna know what imo the best practice amp in the world is? putting the headstock of the guitar on a wooden table or on a cabinet or closet door. it takes on the characteristics of an overdriven tube amp. then when you plug in to a real tube amp you freak out.

The cool thing about the Boogie Mark V is you can vary the power. 10w 45w and 90w ( I think those are the 3 ) but it's functional as a practice amp and you can catch them on Craig's List for 1/2 list.

Hello there, I see you mentioned the micro cube gx , I purchased one of these amps recently it's a fantastic little amp and has plenty of volume for its size and the features on the amp are brilliant, I would definitely check one of these out before you make your purchase.

I found a guy in my area who sells an almost new Micro Terror with Cabinet at about 170$. I can go and check it out, at least. One thing that bums me about that is the ultra stripped-down nature (not even reverb)...

Why do you say Orange Crushes sound so bad? From the multiple videos I've seen on YT it sounded pretty nice even with high gain...

I see no mention of the Peavey Vypyr solid state amps, I have the Vypyr 40 watt unit, and like it, there are loads of sounds in these guys. The Peavey is plenty loud for most uses, but can work with low volume as well. There is a learning curve, as is with most amps. ......Poppa

I suspect it's simply because there's no accounting for taste. One man's "hot garbage" is another man's "holy grail". The Crush series falls somewhere between those two extremes. It's a solid choice if you ask me.

I tried the Orange Crush 35 I think it was. Sounded terrible. Total waste of money.

The Fender SCX2 has a five year warranty.

This means something to me. Also it's a great amp. Worth saving for. Then, as time permits, put in an Eminence Raging Cajun speaker for a major upgrade - inexpensive and easy to do yourself.

The Fender Super Champ X2 head version is 299US brand new. Works with any 8 ohm speaker.

I'll consider myself lucky... mine has none of the issues you described.
