There was that chick from "The Well Hung" (playing the cheese) who was buying a purple guitar that was in the process of being set up with her gauge strings.

    Exactly.

These are guitars for rock stars.

These are not guitars for the shy bedroom player longing for his great-grandfather's white Strat with maple board and mint scratchguard.

No matter how crazy, these were still within the pricing range of Fender CS guitars

Most of these guitars look like they belong in a KISS 1983 tour. Some I could dig, most I'd pass, maybe I'm too boring. They all look well made for sure.

    Exactly.

These are guitars for showmen. People who want to stand out on stage.

Boring, old-man guitars are why kids switched over to Rap music.

    abs-rockingbat-600.jpg

    That's what's good about them.

You always want something crazier than your comfort zone to be available to you.

If your comfort zone is a .44 Magnum, you are happy that there is a 50 Cal Desert Eagle, just to let you know that it is too big and clumsy for you to carry.

Every guitar I played had mega low action, right off the wall.

All the frets were mirror polished and un-sprouted.

Bindings and finishes were all perfect.

It was quite an impressive collection.

No guitars like these are the reason Grunge happened. It’s all cheesy 80s style over substance. Real rockstars don’t need a flashy guitar to be a rockstar they just are from talent and stage presence. These guitars are mostly for rich collectors that want a Star Trek guitar and probably can’t play a lick to save their lives...

    No way.

Real showmen know that a there are a million better guitar players than themselves in the world.

If you want to be remembered, you better put on a show.

Even if you are just another boring bluesman, if you look like a star, you just might be thought of as a star.

No matter how cool you think your plain white Strat is, nobody in the audience is going to remember it.

Ace Frehely, Ted Nugent, Billy Gibbons, Keith Urban....

The original Ed Roman secretly made many of the guitars that were sold by other boutique builders. There are a bunch of them on the old Ed Roman website.

I know he made a replica with fender style trem for Brian May. Almost had him make me one, but Everett Woods replica was better, so I bought one that he took to the NAMM show.

People seem to remember this guy...

I’m not saying having some ridiculously flashy guitar doesn’t help you stand out but it’s not necessary as you are implying. Only guitar players care what guitar you’re playing and a “cool” guitar isn’t gonna get them to buy your record. Average audience member just cares about you being a good showman and of course having great songs.
Bob Dylan did ok. Great songs trump guitar playing abilities and flashy outfits and guitars.

You can't pick the greatest guitar player who ever lived, and say "See? People noticed him...."

Jimi also played his guitar upsidedown, with his teeth, on fire, and was a black guy.

Same thing with Yingwie and his custard yellow strat.

    -

If you are in a showcase, competing for a 6 month engagement at a major casino, you need every bit of flair you can get.

There are 11 other bands, just as talented as yourselves.

You better LOOK like an exciting band.

If your band looks like 4 guys who just got off their day jobs at the factory - one guy with a Fender shirt, one guy with a Hardrock shirt, one guy with a Ronjon shirt and shorts; you might as well tie yourselves to a tree with roots, cuz you ain't going nowhere......

John sent me this very tongue and cheek video.

    Electric mandolin sounds great...

Thanks for the pics, Vid. If I'm ever in Las Vegas, I'd go check the place out. Even though there wasn't a single guitar in those photos I'd want to own, it's cool to see some guitars that push the envelope of construction, as well as taste.
