For the last week or so I'd noticed both my Blackstar 20 watters seemed to have lost their chime, they seemed kinda dark. And seemed like I was having to up the volume a bit. No hissing or any other noises though.

I was thinking my old ears were just getting tired. I was going to get an EQ pedal but my normal advice is " if your tube amp starts doing weird stuff start with the tubes ". Sure enough, some new EL84s did the trick

At least the Blackstars only have 2 pre amp and two power tubes. Both my Mesa and HK amps have 7 tubes each.

I've re-tubed a couple of amps (well the amp tech did) recently, and my wallet feels your pain....

    I love 'em.

    Except the weight.

    Finicky...or do they have character.

Just getting in to tube amps. What causes a tube to go bad! Age, use, abuse, sun spots . . .?

    For future reference.

    Thanks,

Just regular use. The more gain and volume you use wears them faster. Also, higher bias settings have a big part to play in their longevity.

This was about 63 bucks for both amps. So not bad. One of the chassis really hated being removed though

In my case I think it was just age. And I've had a couple people tell EL 84 go a little sooner than some other types

Curious as to the make of those original equipment power tubes in your two Blackstar 20s,
AND, how long did you have them in service & how much play time use do they regularly get?

Seems to me that you got those amps 2-to-3 years ago, right?

Im not sure on either count. I'm pretty sure I got them about 2 years ago but can't guarantee it. I did a speaker swap in one about 6 months ago and the chassis was stuck so tight i took it in the shop where he had to take a mallet and a pry bar to it. So I just took one in, you really need to pull the chassis to get to the tubes. That one slid right out. Just tossed the tubes so not sure what they were. I did the other one here. That chassis fought me like crazy getting it out. After I got it I just plucked the old ones out. Those are the ones pictured. There are JJs in both of them now

They both get used at least 5-10 hours a week I'd say on average

Are those the HT20 amps? I thought they were EL34 amps no?

I had one of those for a while, the cleans were absolutely superb I thought!

The MKI has 34s. I still have one I keep as a just in case amp. The MKII has 84s

Ah ok cool, I didn't realise they had changed things that much with the MkII! Mine was a MKI, a very nice amp it was!

I've had MKI and MKII versions of the 20 and 40 watt amps. In both cases the MKII was a step up. They didn't go wild changing stuff but what they did really counted
