I can't believe that I don't know this, but did Fender introduce the American Performer Strat recently, perhaps to replace the older Standard Strat? I may have heard about it and forgot, but was recently looking for a loaded pickguard for a "build" that I am doing and came across this Performer SSS loaded PG with Yosemite pickups and the lower tone control that is push/push to turn the neck pup on when the switch is in any position. I bought it and it is really nice....looks like the electrics of a PRO II, but with different pups. Are the American Performer guitars any good?

American Performer replaced the American Special. I think Performers are great guitars, but I’m not a fan of the grease bucket tone circuit.

I have the Performer in Penny finish and I really love it. I have a number of Strats and originally bought it because I was seduced by the Penny finish. :whistling: Since then it has become my main Strat, I just love it. I never thought I'd be comfortable with the jumbo frets but they've been a revelation. And the old school large headstock is cool.
I'm looking to buy another, probably an HSS, but it occurs to me that I should wait as they've been around a couple of years and maybe there's a Performer II on the horizon?

I really like the performer line. I currently have the mustang and I play it every day. The neck on the performer line is so smooth and the big headstock on them are really cool.

As geetaruke says, the Performer replaced the American Special, which itself had replaced the Highway One series.
I probably an a little off on the timeline, HWY about 2004-2010, Special 2010-2016, Performer 2016- present.

I think they were all really good guitars, especially at their price points.

I just got the HSS in sunburst. I have zero complaints. I already had the Deluxe case and wanted the Vintage style bridge and fat headstock so It was a win all around for me.

    Pickups are great.

Just to build on the timeline:
    • Highway 1 v.1 - circa 2003-mid 2006
    • Highway 1 v2 - mid 2006 to some point in 2011
    • American Special - 2010 - November 2018
    • American Performer - December 2018 - present
The first Highway 1s could have been fall 2002 though. And for whatever reasons Fender kept the Highway 1 (v2) around for all of 2010 and part of 2011 even after introducing the American Specials in January 2010; normally Fender discontinues the older model right before introducing the new/replacement model.

I hated mine! I loved the neck but couldn't get on with the tones somehow (and had trouble with one of the tuners). Strat lovers seem to like them though. Incidentally I stuck around here as the cork sniffers on the Les Paul forum are too boring.

Eventually I found what I really wanted from single coils was more of a 50s Tele.
