If you can build guitars that are really playable, then you're already great in my eyes. Being a good guitarist is a completely different thing. I had a recording contract from EMI, but I couldn't build a guitar if my life depended on. So I guess I suck at building guitars... :)

I’m going to relate this to cooking because I do that professionally. Doing that job for however many hours a week for 20 years I’m still improving and refining skills. I’m better than 98% of the humans on the planet problem but I don’t compare myself to them I compare myself to the final 2%. Point I’m making is Hendrix, Beatles changed music. Then you have bands like the Dead, Led Zeppelin, ABB countless others that were absurdly talented. Don’t compare yourself to them, just work on getting better than you were a month ago. Also, get a teacher if you don’t have one and if you do make sure it’s the correct teacher. It took me a while to fine the right teacher, but it’s worth it.

I think it's tougher when you don't have anyone to play with. I end up playing the same crap over and over. I haven't improved much in a long time. But I love it.

my goodness those are beautiful guitars! I think if you really really wanted to play you could. If I was you I would go find a good teacher that you can relate to and set specific goals and a structured lesson plan and practice plan. Then put in the effort to play everyday or as often as you can. Good luck man! I'd love that LP Jr!

I bet you play better than this guy, and he certainly doesn’t build guitars! On a side note, my job at one time was to clean the original fuzzy ZZTOP guitars for the Hard Rock Cafe. They displayed them above the bar and every 6 months I had to comb all the fur with woolite and a toothbrush to clean the fur from all the bar scuzz.

I don't practice properly, I really just play to have fun.

I've been playing probably over 30 years. But it is 30 years of 1 year of experience over and over.

Yes I suck also. And every time I decide I’m going to try to learn to get better I get intimidated and then get pulled into another direction. Currently that direction is buying and/or building gear. Thing is I’m doing that so much that I don’t play. And therefore I don’t get better. And therefore I suck.

If you're spending more time building than playing guitars then you've already chosen. You're going with your first love. It's a rare person that can excel in any one field let alone two. You are truly exceptional, and should realize your mastery. ;)

Well. it's like cars, sometimes the guy turning the wrenches on Ernhardt's race car isn't going to win a NASCAR race for the race team. I tend to be better at set ups & repairs than I am with making music from the instrument. I would want another to build a guitar though, I'm not the best builder for final finish. The math of it and alignment turn out fine, but it's rubbing the finish to perfection that I end up short on every time.

I started playing when I was 60. I'm now 63 so progress is slow (old dog, new tricks) but I practice every day and I'm gradually improving. I'll never be in a band but I jam with friends and I'm having fun. That's enough for me.

I love your alternative take on a Telecaster.

Hi, all. I definitely suck at guitar. 30 years ago in high school I was by far the worst of my friends who played guitar. I played on stage a couple of times but I couldn’t get through a piece without messing it up.

Fast forward to today where I’ve pulled out my old axe (Yamaha SE-150) and I have delusions of picking up a Fender. I lack the discipline to practice but I do enjoy my own noodling.

With the resources online it’s a lot easier to find information and tips, so I certainly believe I can become a better in time. Perhaps a new guitar might also motivate me, as well as the forum here.

I play for my own pleasure.
    And I'm my harshest critic.
    So, yeah...I suck.

Maybe we could form a band. The Sucktones.:D
