The downsides of social media have never been as obvious as they are today. The free flow of information is a double-edged sword. One of the best things for humanity, and also one of the worst things. Facebook is one of many outlets. The toothpaste is out of the tube, never going back in. On the bright side, knowledge has become much more freely obtained. The info you'd only learn in high-level college courses, is freely available today.
Not just that but how will I know what Bill Gates is going to do next...... Or who or what is a hologram or a computer generated image....not just in videos but in real life ..... Without Facebook ......I can't tell what's real or not anymore .... Maybe my neighbor is a lizard person and I wouldn't know anymore
Yes indeed. I deleted my account over 2 years ago and don't miss it one bit. Full of toxic, petty people. Attention is the new drug people are craving and they'll do crazy stuff to get it.
Never had an account, never will. Aside from those who use the platform to keep in touch with family and the like, I think social media has been detrimental to the good of the global community.
I have recently begun using FB Marketplace. I haven't formed an overall opinion yet, but I do appreciate ads being associated with the seller. It seems to keep people from overposting the way they do on my local CL.
"FB for me was mostly a one-way CB radio, sending a signal out into the black void." That about sums it up. I'm only keeping it for a few political posters who haven't been banished yet, the Corgi and Cojack dog posters, and Marketplace. I've seriously considered dropping it entirely. Either that or I'll post something to get me permanently ousted. And, one day, I'm pretty sure Zuckerberg's face will be removed to reveal an android underneath.
I have a page, a few cat pictures, a few fractals. I use it to work with fractal and videography groups, that's about it. I avoid it otherwise. It smells bad. I had an Occulus Quest VR headset, but sold it when the Face bought the company. No way I'm feeding my VR data to them.
I grew up with the wife of one of FB's founders. She is a real person at least. I think Zuck is just the embodiment of when someone with a good idea gets inundated with greed and power. It can happen to a lot of otherwise regular people. Investors and money do the thinking and feeling for him.
Purely for the local groups. My doggie escaped from the garden today. Posted missing dog. Got a reply and we are now reunited.
I cut any of my ties with Facebook at around 2015 so you can guess how "calm" my life has been ever since. The only two social media accounts I hold are on Twitter and Discord, and the latter isn't really social media. I have no real reason to use Facebook and I might sound like a tinfoil hat theorist but I value my data and such (although that seems a bit useless to say given my two Twitter accounts....)
