As a player, do you enjoy live music more?

As a guitar player, do you enjoy live music more or maybe sometimes less? I have a friend who doesn't play an instrument and it seems like he's up for any live music, any time, any place, any band, and he almost always thinks they were "off the charts".

I've noticed that I've become a lot more discerning, or critical, when it comes to the live shows that I'll attend. If the band, and the guitarist, is good, I think being a guitar player can really enhance the experience. When I'm watching another player who's really on their game, and I understand how difficult it is to do what they're doing, it pumps me up. On the other hand, if the guitarist isn't that great, sometimes I find myself being overly critical and feeling unimpressed and it takes something off of the experience.

I guess ignorance can be bliss sometimes, like my friend, but I'll take being a player and having a more discerning ear when it comes to guitar prowess. When you're watching a really good player and you are a player yourself, I think it enhances the experience. What do you guys think?

No. Most live music is played by hobbyists, and I don't enjoy hearing a half-assed performance. Out of 50 bar bands there might be one that really plays in tune and in time.

After years of playing in and running sound for bands, I just don't want to go out and see bands.

    On the nose. :D

I've seen enough live music. If its not a big act or if I ain't playing...I don't bother.

Yeah, I do. I appreciate what goes into the music I'm hearing more, and I respect the guts it takes to stand up in front of a crowd and play like that.

when it comes to live music it’s all about presence. If you got the style I’m hooked. Now you got to suck hard before I let it go.

I don't go out of my way to see live music, but if I'm out and there is a live band playing, I definitely check it out. There's something about the sound of live drums that I really enjoy.

I prefer the sound of live music, though that's usually overcome by my preference to be home :).

I'm both more critical and more impressed. But I do have to say that, being in my late 50s now, it takes a special show or occasion to get my happy ass out of the house and to a performance.

I just don't go 'out' like I use to. That said, I'm getting back into music, and music video production, so I've been going to very local spots to check out the scene again, and network. There's a trickle of stuff going on here in West Seattle, but nothing that knocks my socks off. I can tell pretty quick if I'm going to enjoy a band.

However there is some nice stuff out there. Here is a band I shot as a test (the Parlementarians, a loose group of musicians who play there, at The Parliament occasionally). Competent folks jamming away, not bad and not sloppy covers of well worn hits. Note the Tele through the Supersonic 22. My man!

When I don't have shows I go out and support other local bands in town... I always prefer original bands... I appreciate live music a lot more now that I've played on stage so many times. And I especially appreciate original bands.

As did a lot of us too, when we were younger, much younger...

I hear it better and, yes, appreciate it more. I appreciate the skill, the musicality, the creativity.

I enjoy live music, and I don't mind at all if the guys are just mediocre, as long as they're playing interesting music and having fun doing it, and especially if they're not playing way too loud .

Rarely go see a ‘bar band’ doing covers. But I do go and see original music or blues or sometimes jazz every few weeks.

Honestly, I really really enjoy a great performance but, will leave a mediocre one more often than not.

    Of course its all subjective.
