I think one of the things in the original post was that he was looking for some not-country country. I know there are loads of classic country acts but I'm not sure that's what OP was looking for. just a thought anyway.

What could be less Country than a song written by Bob Dylan and performed by The Byrds?

Really can't beat this for newer country, in my humble opinion. I also recommend his live shows, as he does a full set of his country stuff, with a few rearranged Staind songs mixed in, then comes out with his acoustic and plays whatever the hell he feels like playing.

Forgive me, I did not read all 6 or so pages of this thread, so if anyone else has said this, I second the idea:

Listen to the instrumental country tracks that have been recorded over the decades by wonderful pickers. Even Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys did instrumentals.

No words to bother with, lots of good picking!

I had a Poco record back in the early 70's - great vocals and pedal steel.

If you can't decide between country, rock, or metal, there's a great album for you. David Allen Coe did an album with Dimebag and Pantera called Rebel Meets Rebel. Phenomenal album!

Well, in the late 80s hair metal had taken over and every band sounded the same.
Heard this song on KFROG in San Berdoo
