**Country Music** you don't have to be embarrassed listening to:
Neko Case - People Got A Lotta Nerve
I think one of the things in the original post was that he was looking for some not-country country. I know there are loads of classic country acts but I'm not sure that's what OP was looking for. just a thought anyway.
Jenny Lewis & Elvis Costello - Carpetbaggers
What could be less Country than a song written by Bob Dylan and performed by The Byrds?
The Byrds "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere"
Really can't beat this for newer country, in my humble opinion. I also recommend his live shows, as he does a full set of his country stuff, with a few rearranged Staind songs mixed in, then comes out with his acoustic and plays whatever the hell he feels like playing.

Then the answer is Drive-By Truckers.
I like this!
If you can't decide between country, rock, or metal, there's a great album for you. David Allen Coe did an album with Dimebag and Pantera called Rebel Meets Rebel. Phenomenal album!
Really like Kevin Fowler might be to country. This is not an official video.
You'll be humming this one all afternoon...
Old 97's feat. Brandi Carlile - Good With God
Well, in the late 80s hair metal had taken over and every band sounded the same.
Heard this song on KFROG in San Berdoo
And I became a fan.
Always dug this un
