Today was my brother's birthday. I asked him if he liked carrot cake. He said yes.

So being the nice guy that I am I offered him some, I got a half cake on an impulse buy yesterday. Not only did he say yes, he actually took some

It wasn't supposed to work like that . He should have politely declined

    :p

maybe he assumed you had the other half of the cake already, since all he saw was half a cake. so he is wondering about your birthday etiquette

Yeah, he should have known better. My brother is always pushing my buttons too. He dropped by yesterday with some big flower pots and some really nice grasses for our back deck so out of politeness we offered him lunch. Wouldn’t you know it, he accepted. The nerve :p

Rule 1: never gamble more than you can afford to lose.
Rule 2: never offer carrot cake to your brother on his birthday.

I went to 7-11 on a Christmas Day a couple years ago. Some guy was out front with a gas can bumming money. Mind you there isnt a gas station anywhere close to that store. My. Dew was on sale, like get 2 for 3 dollars or something.

Usually those guys just want cash. So I figured I was safe. He freaking took a Mt. Dew. It isnt supposed to work like that

Well it probably would be, except for all of the icing. As a matter of fact, I think the purpose of the carrot cake is only to be a vessel to support the icing on top. It’s a bit like a tortilla chip being there to support all of the nacho ingredients.

    Panhandling is thirsty work!

But I think I see your problem. You appear to be rather weak in the area of risk assessment.
You think the other person will turn down your offer, and you make that offer without a plan in place. For example: in both cases, if you had peed on the cake or in the bottle, then offered, they almost certainly would have been turned down. This assumes the panhandler wasn't really destitute and was actually working.
If that should fail and your offer was accepted, a simple "oh wait, there's not enough here for both of us" would have extracted you from the obligation with grace, proving:
    1. You're a nice guy, after all, you offered. And
    2. You're practical, you were able to assess there really wasn't enough to go around after all.

When panhandlers accost me, I ask them right off if they have change for a $100.00. If they say no, then I'm off scott free, if they say yes, then they obviously don't need my money. ;)
