There's a guy local to me selling a VERY well used one for $275, powers on but no sound. Says it needs a new power tube. I asked why he thought that's what it needs and he said a friend told him lol. Anyway, I asked what led up to the loss of sound and he said it was crackly, then lower volume, then no volume. Does that sound reasonable? I realize it could be other things but I may be willing to take a chance if I can get it cheap enough.

At this price there’s not much this thing could have that wouldn’t be worth fixing... that’s a Gem for sure.

I can get it for less, but if I end up having to spend a couple hundred on it the "deal' goes away real fast. Going to have to flip a coin on this one I guess. My luck is pretty good.....

To me these are very bad amps. When I've had my shop there was a friend who had a shop too and he took ten of these amps for his studio. After a month or two all the amps went to service for something. I've had a Blues Deville which came to me with microphonic tubes as new. I've sent it back after 20 minutes of trying. Very very bad amps.

The Deville is as far as I know the same circuit as the Blues Deluxe in a bigger cabinet with an additional speaker. Never played a Deville but I've had a BDRI for years and it's still going strong with no sign of degenerating or breaking down. It is what it is - not a glorious 50's Fender Tweed, but not bad at all. At least in my experience. If one can't sound good on a BDRI, they won't sound good on a Dumble either.

Answering the question, the story the seller told sounds plaausible to me.

Not a bad sounding amp when its in good condition, but I think these have chips and semiconductors in there? That might be more costly to diagnose and repair.
