My bassist son (12) that plays with his sisters in a band also plays the bass in middle school. Carrying all of his books and bass to school has been killing his back, so I decided to get him another to keep at school.

His main bass is an EBMM short scale stingray, which wasn’t cheap. But the Sterling affiliate sells a cheaper version. I found a used one (even more cheap - yay!), knowing that he wouldn’t like the color (daphne blue), and agreed to strip and refinish it.

I’m using nitro lacquer by a furniture company named Amy Howard. It still needs a light sand, one more coat of color, then clear and polishing, but so far he’s pleased with how it is coming along.

Very nice! I do a lot of refinishing and if you stripped it and started from wood then I can say, from what I can see, you have a good amount of patience. It looks really smooth and after a sand and polish I bet it will be like a factory finish.
I normally spray automotive finishes instead of furniture finishes so they will keep their color over time though.

Thanks! I did strip to wood (some variant of “mahogany”) using a heat gun.

I filled the grain, primed, then color. I could’ve done better filling the grain to cut down on a coat or two of primer and color, but didn’t have great lighting where I was sanding. And conditions (temp/wind) haven’t been ideal, but I don’t have a dedicated space with good ventilation, so have been doing it outside when not windy.

This is my first guitar/bass body refinish, but patience is something that I’ve acquired as I’ve aged. In my teens I couldn’t have waited to be done.

Here’s what the grain looked like under the original finish, and under whatever type of thick bondo (or whatever it was) under the color.

You definitely did a bang up job. The last one I did, I intentionally only filled the grain about half way only using primer. Then shoot the color on it. I really liked how the grain showed through the Dodge Jazz Blue color. I used the clear to make it smooth as a piece of glass.

That looks great, and I like seeing the grain!

The grain was inconsistent on the body I started with, which made me lean towards filling from the get-go.

A bit more waiting for the nitro to cure and some additional polishing, but coming along a bit more (please excuse the polishing remnants/dust).

Thanks. The color would not have been my first choice either, but it has grown on me.
