I agree 100%. The Boss sounds good and would be a fun tool for home play/practice but IMO the Princeton was waaaaayyyyy more dimensional and had a far better tone. Even sounded bigger with the smaller speaker. The Boss almost sounded like a recording of someone playing guitar vs the Princeton. I played a Katana 50 at GC last week and while it was good I do not see where it sounds any different that a Mustang, Spider or other SS amp with onboard effects and such. Not putting down what others choose to play but all these type amps sound and feel to me like I'm playing through Garage Band.

    Oh yeh
    The GC guy sez
"Sure You don't want the 100?"
    Me sez
"I'm not even certain I'm going to like this. How many days do I have to hate/love it?"
    He sez
    "45 Days"

At least you are now in the position of making your own mind up, in your own home, with plenty of time to try everything.

Blimey, I only drive that far when I'm off on my holidays and then it usually rains all they way. ;)

    Happy NAD!

Start on the .5 watt setting. You'll be amazed how loud it gets.

You can download the manual here:
    https://www.boss.info/global/support/by_product/katana-50/owners_manuals/

This is one product I would recommend just taking a stab-at in terms of the controls. Unfortunately the Boss instructions for updating the firmware is rather obscure (at best). I can cut/paste valid instructions later. For now............... just make some noise and report back!

Edit: I should note that the latest firmware is dated Oct 2016 so there is no need to update recently received amps.

Hop around the internet and you'll find a whole lot if people that respectably disagree and their numbers increase every year. Many of them long time gigging musicians and store owners

To each their own. It's a endless tail chase that will never have a winner

The guy over at 60 cycle hum has done another demo with proper mics.

Not bad for an amp that only models EL34/84 valves, not other amplifiers and has a 12" speaker. In a band situation the difference wouldn't be heard.

I may get to test this on Sunday, as I have a rare chance to play with friends from my old band.

I honestly don't find the whole "does it sound precisely and exactly like my ______" to be all that interesting. For me, amps like the Katana should be judged on a basis of "Can this thing sound good in a bunch of wildly different situations and different genres?" I like/play/write in/record a lot of different kinds of music and even if a genie popped up and offered me "The surpreme Grail Tone" I would have to answer back "Ummm, I need several."

I like the Katana for what it is and can do. I haven't spent hours trying to replicate it exactly, but my main amp being a Princeton for years does make the sounding close very useful for me, to be honest it's an unexpected bonus. It probably wouldn't mean anything to anybody else though.

As for the other sounds the Katana can make, I still don't have anything stored in the memories, because I'm forever changing the sound, depending on what I'm playing or what mood I'm in. All at a volume that doesn't rattle the cups, though it can quite easily, even on 0.5watts.

    Don't get it either.

If I wanted something that sounded exactly like X and nothing else then I'd buy X

IMHO I don't want to be that limited when today's offerings are so good.

That's the best thing about the Katana, you can do your own thing. If I want to make it sound like my Princeton, I can try, but there is no instant Princeton/Twin/Marshall/Vox switch, button menu whatever.

A tube amp is far more limiting.
