Bucky Pizzarelli just passed on. https://www.usatoday.com/story/ente...fter-testing-positive-coronavirus/5112393002/ https://www.npr.org/2020/04/02/8261...rist-and-prolific-session-musician-dead-at-94 With a seven string
Sad to hear of his death, although in truth I had never heard of him. Reading the links he certainly left his mark on the musical world though and 94 is a really good innings. RIP.
He was the house guitar player for "The Tonight Show" in New York; he played with Sinatra and Les Paul among many others. "The list of musicians he collaborated with includes Benny Goodman, Les Paul, Stéphane Grappelli, and Antônio Carlos Jobim. Pizzarelli cited as influences Django Reinhardt, Freddie Green, and George Van Eps.[1][2]" '"Jersey Jazz Guitars" was the name of a 1985 concert held at the Rutgers University Nicholas Music Center in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The ticket featured Pizzarelli, Les Paul, Tal Farlow, and Pizzarelli's son, John. "
Here they are playing together: 14 strings worth of Pizzarelli power. Notice Bucky's smooth old school style of single note playing; using almost entirely downstrokes gives a very consistent attack to the notes. John does a bit more alternate picking. But one of the things i like best is how much both of them seem to enjoy playing rhythm guitar, and how creative they are at it. It's not always all about the 'weedly weedly' stuff, people.
