Where am I?
I am surprisingly unaffected.

I liked the guitar. And as amps go, that little fella was spirited...and they served me well for a boatload of years.
But I haven't been able to let either use the voice they were created with since October 2006.

More than anything they served to remind me of what a bigot stole from me that day so long ago.
My goodness, I hope he paid for what he did to your hand. That is not fair, neither is cancer. Your cup is full sir, let us help if we can.

Chemo where I live was free both times my wife required it. She's got a couple of those t-shirts.
It makes me sad and angry when I hear about the costs to the average citizen for health care down there.
Oh well I guess the lucky ones will reap the profits on their 401K eh? And the not so lucky one are well, not so lucky. /rant

Fingers crossed for you sir, that you're dealt a good hand going forward.

Not really. He did time but not the length mandated by statute, particularly because he was still on probation for assaulting someone else a year before he attacked spouse and I.

During his sentencing he erupted with a demand to get his $20,000 back. The judge, prosecutor, and defense lawyer all started "shushing" him.

I was surprised to learn that his defense had only cost him 20k. Took a bit sink in. I suspect that he wasn't complaining about the cost of his defense, he was complaining about the cost of his reduced sentence.

Rich guy don't ya know. Trust fund nut job.

Your offer is enough. It's heart-warming knowing generosity still lives.

Is this the son of you sociopath ex neighbour or just another bad guy you had to suffer along the way?
No, a different asshat.

2006 spouse and I encountered a racist in the parking lot of a large shopping mall complex, seeking to rid the world of mixed race couples. With a knife. He went for me first. My hand was permanently damaged as a result.

He is lucky he went for me first, things would have ended differently for him had he gone for spouse, or if she had seen him coming. As it was, she was in the process of going ninja on his ass when a motorcycle cop put his bike between us and the bigot.

She would have crippled his manhood and then broken just enough of him to keep him in a chair the rest of his miserable existence...but not so much as to numb his ability to feel pain.

Spouse can be surgical when necessary.

All told, the whole thing lasted about 10 seconds. I understand that is longer than average.

Chemo runs me $1200 a dose. Spouse insists I continue with chemo. So...
Got myself a few more doses outta the deal.

Plus a backyard telescope. She says I can have one of those.

But...
I don't feel any sense of loss. That came when the doctor told me in 2008 that the damage to my hand wasn't surgically correctable.

That was a loss.
This is more melancholy I suppose.
That's so....wrong having to pay that amount.
:(

I am a total newb. I know nothing. I just want a good look at the Orion Nebula before I drop dead. And maybe the moons of our neighborhood big guys...

Yeah man, don't get old...and then sick. It really sucks balls.

For about 10 years, I had an Orion 8" Dobsonian Reflector with a focal length of ~1200 mm.

Had to bequeath it to a friend who was a Principal of her Local High School for their Physics Dept.

After I lost my leg, I just couldn't carry both the Optical Tube Assembly or the Base down the back stairs and out to the pool deck.

But, even from the severely light polluted location in my White Zone 14 miles due West of Midtown Manhattan, I got stunning views of the Orion nebula. Also, views of most of the Messier Series Globular Clusters were mind blowing. The scope had a 10 mm and a 25 mm eyepiece lenses which provided 120 and 49 power magnifications respectively.

I can recommend that scope or one of the same specs from another manufacturer, Lots of Bang for the Buck ( did I say Lots?).

Now, I have bought a more manageable 4", 700 mm Refractor and tripod.

I've seen several others here that displayed some of their impressive setups, too.

Go to Ed Ting's pages on YouTube.
You'll get a lot of easy to digest techie info there.

What a senseless thing to have happen. So awful. Did you never play again after the knife attack? And I wish you the best of outcomes.

I was in physical therapy for a year following and then played one night...October 27, 2007. It was the last time I was to perform.

Was back in touch with the hand guy who'd been treating me the following Monday and an MRI ensued. The tendons and ligaments were ...
"Not surgically repairable." Picture an old hemp rope. Now picture it unraveled.

I couldn't play any stringed instruments at the level I, and more importantly, those who paid me to accompany them, had a right to expect. There was no bringing it back.

So I stepped out.
Fini. Finis. Fade To Black.

I hope you find, or have found, other things in your life that generate enthusiasm, joy and meaning for you. From reading what you have written, I think you have it in you.
Thank you.
I'd returned to school in 2018. Pursuing a doctorate. Covid put the brakes on and illness ran it off the rails. That thing about getting god to laugh by sharing your plans...!

Now I read. Just read.

Wow Reed, I was attacked a long time ago, by a guy with a knife. That can be scary. Fortunately, I wasn’t hurt. Can’t say the same for him.

He did try to stab me in my stomach, and put a nice hole in my shirt. This happened in 8th grade at my school, and there were plenty of witnesses.

I am sorry that you were targeted by a bigot.

That’s horrible, I’m so sorry you had to go through that. Why are so many people just awful? :(
