I found someone willing to sell me a Marshall footswitch for $5.. Will it work for my Boss Katana 50 in order to switch between 2 preset amp sounds?

You need a latching switch which means on stays on until you kick it a second time then it is off.
Marshall has all type of switches(latching unlatching impedance switching voltage regulated...) so as long as we don´t which Marshall switch we can´t answer your question.
Look if there´s a latching switch installed (Marshall site or look online and take a look at the specs).

    All the best,
    Robin

Buy a Boss FS-5L like the manual says. The Marshall switch might work if latched but only one switch would work. If the marshall is unlatched it would vary between not working or having to hold your foot on the switch all the time for one of the channels. I have used Boss FS-5L and FS-5U for years. Nice foot switches.

From the manual: If you connect a footswitch (sold separately: FS-5L), you can use your foot to switch between CH. 1 and CH. 2. If you connect an expression pedal (sold separately: Roland EV-5, BOSS FV-500L, BOSS FV-500H), you can use your foot to vary the volume.

$30 at Sweetwater - probably $10 on ebay.

The Marshall does not work becaue it has a stereo plug. It always shorts and can be a problem with your Katana.
    Do it like @pazman6 mentioned.
For the few more bucks I wouldn´t risk anything or doing damage on the switching circuit.

    All the best,
    Robin

Not sure I follow you. The Katana FS-6 footswitch has a TRS (stereo ) plug. As long as it's a latching switch why wouldn't it work?

I use a Peavey 2 button footswitch with my Kat 50 with no problems, left button changes banks, right button changes channels. Already had the switch for my now unused Delta Blues and Studio Pro so it didn't cost me anything to experiment.
