Can we agree that "MIM" is not a model?

Wow. This board has been getting along all this time with this huge underlying problem. Amazing.

1st poster: I want to upgrade the tuners on my MIM, help?

2nd poster: What tuners do you have now?

I guess that doesn't make sense. It would be better if we can find a way to indoctrinate all the new posters to confirm to our expectations...

Right ? I can’t believe people don’t even mention the color and year of production ! Is it a sunburst 2004 MIM or a red 2012 MIM ?

Like when buying car parts, we should demand the Serial Number so that we can pin down exactly what they have. This would help with giving advice about crucial replacements like strap buttons and strings..................sorry, sarcasm

I think MIM generally refers to the Standard model. If someone has a Roadworn or a Classic Series they tend to identify it as such. That’s my take on it anyway.

    No more Standards....MIM or MIA.

It's been a while since I was actively buying/fixing/modding MIMs. But it is absolutely a thing. It gives you a starting point. These days, when craigslist is hit or miss whether a guitar is properly described, a scam, a counterfeit, having a starting point is very helpful. When I'd be on the hunt with a craigslist seller who said the guitar is a Mexican Fender Strat.....I'd ask lots of questions... But having a starting point of MIM is great. Getting the serial number is even better because then it tells me what the pickups, electricals, fret size, tuners, yada yada yada all are.

No, MIM is definitely not a "Model"! But there are a lot of Models of Mexican built guitars that are a REAL bargain and extremely well built instruments!
