Can you loosen your neckplate screws under string tension?

I'm used to playing an Epiphone dot but I traded it away and now I have an Eric Johnson thinline strat. I'm not sure if this is normal or not but sometimes it feels like the high e slips off the fretboard so I looked up how to fix it and came across this video. He suggests loosening the neckplate screws about a 1/2 turn and then putting pressure on the neck and screwing it back up. When I did it I noticed a creaking sound when I loosened each screw. Is this normal? Did I damage the guitar?

It's safe, and a common way to align a neck. :thumb::thumb:

Loosen a little, perhaps ... but defining won't defeat to process. All that is needed is to shift the neck to provide a touch more on the first string side. The strings don't need to be turned for that.

Loosening the screws is a good thing to do just for the sake of tightening the joint. You're good.

The creak is unsettling but I’ve done this with all my strats over many years with no problems!
