Here is the downloadable backing track for all you fine S-T members who care to join in our musical jamboree. Before you get into a frenzy of activity, please take a moment to read my explanation of what the file contains, and how you use it.

The file has 36 bars of slow blues in A. That's:

    12 bars just as a count-in
24 bars for you to play over

What I'd like from you in return, please is a message telling me where I can download your file, which should contain the following:

    12 bars of silence
24 bars of your playing with no audible backing track!

If you do it right, it will look something like this.

    SC blues take.png
    DEADLINE: April 8, please
File format: 16-bit/44.1kHz .WAV is fine, but I can work with just about anything

My download file is a .WAV. Please let me know if you need an mp3 and I will upload in that format too.

I'm figuring that, here in 2021, nearly all of you have DAWs (Digital Audio workstation), or other multitracking device. If that isn't the case, you can still take part, but you'll need to go about it slightly differently. Because you have no way of starting the backing and your recording simultaneously, you'll need to put your phone (or whatever) into record, then put the backing into play. Please make sure the backing is still just about audible, so I can synchronise your take to my master backing track.

Thank you in advance for not making the job any harder than it needs to be. :D

Oooo grabbing it now. Thank you Simon for hosting the effort. With this much time, I might even do some vox, bass and keys just because I need the practice. Only the guitar part for this though, no sense making everyone gag, lol.

I don't want to jump in if you're already full :D

You are welcome come to submit takes that are not guitar, but please send me each one separately (ie, one downloadable file for Bavarian nose flute, another for keyboard etc)

There is no 'list' and there is no 'full'. It will probably help everyone taking part if I explain what happens next. Although everyone is submitting 12 bars of silence, followed by 24 bars of playing, not everyone plays at once in the final production. Notice how I've offset the individual takes, so that it's one player after another. Also, my version of the backing track repeats every 36 bars. This means 1) I can add as many new tracks as needed to accommodate new participants and 2) I can extend the duration for as long as needed, so anyone gets their 'place in the sun'. :)

The super-observant among you may notice that the supplied backing track goes one beat over the 36 bars. Why? To give your last note, along with any reverb or delay times, a chance to decay naturally. It's where your recordings start that aids the synchronisation process. The fact the sound file goes slightly over the bar at the end creates no problems at all.

I must find my Bavarian nose flute! Or did I loan it to Thruppers?

    First guy in. Whoahhh! :eek::D

You're still welcome. Read my second post, where I explain how you can take part using not much more than a phone, although you'll still need a PC or a tablet to play the backing track at the same time as you record.:)

I went by Improv Challenge rules. Listened to the 12 bar intro, noodled over that, and then went for it on bar 13. One and done.
