Because if you play to a 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 pattern, and the 2 and 4 are the accented strong beats, you learn to swing. So we set the beat so it only plays 2 and 4.

Think of how a jazz player counts the band in. He snaps his fingers on 2 and 4, never on 1 and 3.

The 2 and 4 are the weaker beat of the bar.

Now here's a classic example of how a perfectly timed beat just flies out the window when it comes to Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band. Check out how the drummer & other musicians interact to create a very complex backbeat that defies simple logic.

Correct. Unless they are specifically accented more than the 1 and 3.

i put this here so you can learn the BEAT.
and not worry about all the crap going on.

Oh so much to learn... That one seemed like I could not count it through steadily. It always came back but I did lose my way a couple times.

Justin is also offering a metronome app (for free iirc), called TimeTrainer. I like it because it is not just a simple metronome: you can also challenge yourself with the "trainer" setting, where there are e.g. random beats (clicks) dropped or one bar is completely dropped etc. When the metronome click kicks back in, you can see if you hit it or not.

Also, record yourself! Best thing to evaluate your timing. It hurts at first, but you will massively improve and you have a nice "history" of your progress, reviewing old recordings.
