It was a nice bird
AND...Dick Dale invented LOUD.
I know that because Dick Dale said it at one of those concerts. Actually, what he said was, and I quote, "Dick Dale invented loud!"
What was Hunter S. Thompson's line?
"There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die."
I think that would have fit Dick Dale nicely.
Dante1963 misses Dick Dale, too.
I never met Dick Dale. My dear friend 'Jackson' accompanied Dick for quite some time. Jackson developed his Extensor musculature as a result.
Saw him twice about 20 years ago. Fantastic guitarist, unique style.
The other day the old man and I did a SRV/Dale style lead/rhythm swap to pipeline. I was on my Charvel, he was on his JB Strat. We both know all the changes and cranked the reverb of course for surf . I love playing "hot-rodded surf" with a JB equipped Charvel.
When Pulp Fiction came out, they were playing Dick Dale everywhere!
I got to see him at Club Congress in Tucson, lots of fun!
Has his own signature Strat .
Thanks for all your responses guys. It's cool to find out some of you actually met him and seen him in concert. I'm going to go listen to some more of Dick Dales music and try to soak up some of his mojo. I hope he's up there jamming with some of his friends.
Enjoy the journey!
On one of his albums he did a cover (a killer one at that) of Hendrix’s “Third Stone From The Sun.”
He starts it by quietly saying, “Jimi...I’m still here...Wish you were.”
I got to see him do it live at a small club in St. Louis. I was standing about three feet from him and The Beast.
It was extraordinary.
