I saw a video of what might be the earliest rig rundown (1962) and that led me to the full video...
of Barney Kessel performing. I really like this guy's style.
I knew the name, but had never listened to his stuff before.

The last person around here who posted about discovering Barney Kessel
was a guy who went by the handle Guitarvegas.
He disappeared without a trace some years ago...
i hope that your jazz adventure goes well.
    :D
Here's another great one for you:

Been listening to him and been a fan since the 50's. Love the jazz tones he had and was a great player. Always have wished I could sound and play like him.

BK was a contemporary of Charlie Christian, an original member of the Oscar Peterson Trio & a great session musician. I really digg his signature Gibson model of the 60s. They don't get much love in vintage circles, but I think they look & sound fantastic!

Barney Kessel taught me my first cowboy chords.

Barney used to have a shop on Yucca in Hollywood. I got an electric guitar before an acoustic. When it came time to get one, my Dad took me to Barney's shop to get a nice-ish classical guitar. Barney was a kind but curt fellow. He'd tell me I was doing something wrong and physically move my fingers and hand around. Even as a kid, I knew this was unacceptable. We paid for the guitar and left. Once in the car, my Dad asked if I'd like to take lessons from Barney as well as Howard. I said that I'd rather go to Howard, that he was nicer. My Dad just said this: "Barney's a great musician, but he's always been kind of a dick. Howard it is."

    Frightening implications:

little fezz sometimes did "something wrong"

    And

    some musicians are dicks

    Who would have thunk???

    That's why I waited till I was 7.

Also: Johnny Frisco our resident jazz teacher, whacked my thumb with his pen as he walked by when I was playing. I was not his student. :D

In my old age...I've really come to appreciate just how great of a teacher...and human being...Howard was. Smart, kind, cool , funny, but not a pushover. I doubt I'd be the guitar player I am today without him.

And speaking of jazz guitarists, this Johnny Smith tune may sound a bit familiar.

Most of these guys that were posted I know and have listened to at some point, but Kessel is new to me.
His style just struck a nice chord with me (pun intended).
To me, it's more bluesy than most of the others... with a real T-Bone Walker feel and fluidity, but still pretty different.

I was going to mention Kenny, thanks for doing so. Benson's blues streak is pretty top shelf too.
