Zoomed in, it has little black lines through it, almost like little cracks.Has anyone seen this before? I don’t know if it is considered a poorer quality wood or known to crack over time or something.

    Perfectly normal.
    It's wood. It's not fiberglass.

For someone who's only real experience is with wood sporting a paint job, or wood with really pronounced grain, like pine or ash, something like alder can take them by surprise.

I recall my first taste of Purpleheart. I complimented the framer (picture frame fellow) on his staining. He laughed and said 'thanks' then handed me a cut end. It was gorgeous.

Remains my favorite wood, 50 years on.

I saw a chunk in a hardware/lumber store back in the 90s and really, really wanted to build a doubleneck out of it.
Didn't have the tools to do it... didn't even have a bandsaw, just a Craftsman cheapo router and circular saw.
Those worked to cut and dovetail the oak 4x10 I built to go with my Carvin X100.

When I get restless in the middle of the night I assemble a fantasy on Warmoth. It invariably involves purpleheart here, there...with and without binding, rear mounted pickups ...

    If my hands worked...
Spouse would be very unhappy with me.

Is this supposed to be like one of those magic eye posters where you stare t it long enough and then you see a sailboat or something?

I see wood. Normal guitar wood.
