I remember them even into the 70s.
Looks like some FCC regs have been relaxing... heard a couple of radio spots for hard liquor recently. AFAIK, it's been beer/wine/coolers/malt only for a long time.

In the Phillipines, they have cancer treatment centers where the treatment for lung cancer is smoking.
Philip Morris, IIRC, is the US tobacco company with huge marketing there.

As a kid, i remember seeing the "Marlboro man" on billboards everywhere.
Lighting his cigarette with a gas lantern.
    Everyone smoked. Everywhere.
    Wtf were people thinking?

And restaurants, grocery stores, of course bars.
When I worked at Radio Shack in the 80s, my DM used to joke about the "butt plant" growing on my desk. I'd go through 2 packs a day. Smoking wasn't banned in the workplace in general until around 2000. I think bars took a couple more years.

I can understand those old ads, and cigarettes were dished out to all in action during WWII, but how come people nowadays after all we know now are still taking up smoking? o_O

Oddly enough banning smoking on aircraft did cause some problems at the time, engineers doing airframe checks were all of a sudden unable to spot loose rivets on the fuselage as the pressurised hull would leak nicotine and leave streaks behind the rivet heads showing which ones to look at.o_O
