Marsalis was already a fabled name when the boys were making waves in their 20's. They were models, not being much older than myself when I was playing sax in a jazz band. First Family of Jazz is about right. RIP to the patriarch.
2016 Ellis Marsalis (piano), Darryl Hall (double bass) , Mario Gonzi (drums) , Jesse Davis (tenor sax) 01 12'S IT 02 CREPUSCULE WITH NELLY 03 OLD FOLKS 04 RHYTHM-A-THING 05 EMILY RIP.
That is sad. Man, I read he was still gigging even through December last year, which is how it should be..... playing right to the very end! RIP
I met him once. I used to gig with one of his students. As soon as I said his name Mr. Ellis face light up and he told me to go for a walk with him... Super cool ol’ Dude. The old guard is going down... RIP Mr. Ellis... we not gonna see no mo’ like you
