The Dutch engineer who invented the audio cassette died this week at the age of 94.

Lou Ottens was head of product development at Philips when his team shrank music to pocket size.

The device was launched at a Berlin fair in 1963. More than 100 billion cassette tapes were sold worldwide.

    RIP Lou

Remember when the record companies were trying to tax cassettes and make you feel guilty for taping your vinyl for playing in your auto?

Sad to here he is gone. I really liked cassettes they reminded me of my dad's old reel to reel recorder. I really would like to buy a cassette recorder but a lot of the ones on Amazon have bad reviews.

    They are so durable!
I remember chucking them in the back of the car for road trips and they’d keep on playing! For years!

you might have to eject it and give it a shake first

Still have a factory cassette deck in my 2001 Tacoma (my daily driver). It made the 8 track tape look like a hard cover book. Ok, I'm old.

there were a number of companies all trying to come up with the "perfect" small tape format. I had an Aiwa tape (have no idea where it came from) same size as the standard cassette tape but wouldn't line up to the capstan or tape heads.
The Philips cassette won out because they let every company use it without needing to pay licensing fees.
The opposite approach was taken by Sony several years later, and wanted everybody to pay fees for Betamax tapes, but that is another story.
    94 years is a pretty good run R I P

Cassettes were great but I miss my '74 T-Bird with the genuine Phord Philco Phactory 8-track.

He also was involved in developing the CD.

He made the same deal with Sony for the CD as he had done for the CC to ensure their standard became the industry standard.

Something Philips failed to achieve for their Video2000 (double-sided) video (compact) cassette format. Sony too, for that matter, for their Betamax.

Ottens said in an interview some years ago that his biggest regret was the fact that Sony and not Philps had invented the Walkman.

Cassettes were an integral part of my exploration of my musical tastes as a teenager.

Thank you for the music mr. Ottens!

As many, I had an extensive collection. I had boxes of 8 Tracks before the cassette. I tried a couple of the players from the Big Box store. They didn't work....

I remember one cassette from by the Sounds of Bluegrass in the late 70s. It finally wore out after hundreds of plays. :(

I hope Mr. Ottens prospered from his inventions.

Hell yeah, I realized early when I bought my first album that I could have purchased a bag full of cassettes for the same price.
After that I would hit up my friends and record their albums, everyone had a stereo with a turntable and a cassette player.

I had 4 records and a box full of cassettes.:p

Great tech reviewer from the UK.

He noticed a lot of younger people talking smack about the cassette so he made this video.
