Yeah I like the Stones’ stuff too. There is just something magical about a good guitar directly into a good amp that sounds so good to me

so... I'm assuming "subtle distortion" is not part of your vocabulary?

I keep coming back to Gilmour for stuff like this.

Me personally I keep coming back to amp overdrive. I'm sure there are pedals I would like, I just don't have access to any but what is in GC, so not much inspiration there.

Yeah, I'm in love with pure amp overdrive too.

About the only external distortion effects I use these days are ones like "fuzz" that a normal amp can't simulate (a Lovepedal Bonetender). I do have a couple TS808 clones as well (my favorite being a Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive), otherwise I really enjoy pushing the front end of my amps with just my Xotic EP-Booster if I need a little more umph!

    Dr. Iommi. Class dismissed.

Listen to that 1975 Live at Ashbury Park record. Black Sabbath is so jacked on blow they're playing 100 MPH. Ozzy sounds like hell, but that's cocaine.

Iommi's guitar is on the edge of uncontrollable. It's sinister. Symptom of the Universe is crazy heavy. Killing Yourself To Live is from MARS.

    Mick Taylor? Good call!

70's live recordings from Robin Trower. Yowza.

    Yeah man

People get all gaga about comfortably numb but THIS is his best saturated lead tone by far.

For me, my favorite tones are an angry tweed Fender, 68 Marshall Plexi and a Trainwreck Express. Maybe a little Dumble here and there. More overdriven than distorted. Never really needed a clean sound.

    good one.

I grew up with an idea of a guitar player being able to conjure up all sorts of tone colors, from acoustic to jazz to country to blues to rock (all sorts) and more.

We play an instrument than can be very simple, or amazingly complex, in terms of tone color. We have the choice.

That may have worked well for you. :thumb::)

I had to do the reverse to be happy.

VERY clean amp platform, and then a few selected pedals for dirt, wah, delay, etc.

Obviously I love modeling and digital gear and all the options available to those that program their own sounds.

I can recall when "Satisfaction" was a fuzz tone.

I was thinking of my favorite type of distortion actually. For me warm overdrive is not distortion and neither is fuzz those are different things altogether.
