Hi folks! I stumbled upon this amazing looking Fender Highway 1 Stratocaster in Teal Green Transparent color and I immediately fell in love with the sound and overall condition of the guitar. The guitar tech from the store told me that it is in consignment and the guy who's trying to sell it was a bassist so it was never even used! It comes with all the original candies that came from Fender. They're selling it for $650 with no hard case, just a Fender gig bag but I'm still trying to haggle. upload_2020-11-12_19-29-21.gif

Overall condition appears to be 8.5/ 9.0, it still have good fret life (almost zero wear), plastic on pick guard are still in tact! LOL! I can see grains on the body! Pickups are all original and parts aside from the bridge tone knob was modified to control the tone.

This will be a birthday gift from my wife and she gave me a budget of around 650 - 700. My dilemma is that this is also the same price of a brand new Player Series MIM Stratocaster, this also feel amazing (like an old American Standard) but I hate the crappy tuners! Won't even stay in tune!

Should I go with Highway 1? I don't have much experience with Nitro guitars, it feels really REALLY great, feels like "broken -in" neck !

Am I missing anything with an old U.S. guitar vs a new MIM Player Series?

    Cheers!

Highway 1 gets my vote. There’s a reason they’re still the same price it was new, more in some cases. (I’ve just realised 2003 was 17 years ago...) I love my HW1. It’s a great work horse.

You have a good point there at retained its value ;)

I admit that the Player Series still haunts me... I tried the Tidepool colour & it also plays amazing!

This might be my last Strat..... well, for this year! :D

A guitar that you love for it's sound and condition compared to a guitar that won't stay in tune doesn't sound like much of a dilemma.

    Get the HWY.

    Beautiful guitar

People are going to want those small headstock Highway Ones some day.

I currently own a Player Telecaster that I really like. No tuner issues with my Player Telecaster at all, in fact it stays in tune better than some of my much more expense guitars.

I also owned a Highway-1 Telecaster that I loved and that I am still sorry that I sold many years later.

I prefer the color on the Player Stratocaster (just my taste), but I’d probably also go with the Highway-1 guitar.

The Highway-1 was made in the USA VS Mexico, has some of the best rolled necks, and I love the jumbo frets on my Fender guitars.

I believe that Highway-1’s have Texas Special pickup’s that may be hotter pickups than than that on the Player guitar. The pickups are the only thing that I might of changed on my Highway-1 guitar, had I kept it, because I prefer more mellow sounding pickups.

Good luck and Happy Birthday, two good options with either decision.

I own both an American Special with Texas Special pickups, and a Player. I love them both. I like the Texas Special pickups for live gigs, because it gives me more of a useable range, on the guitar's volume control. I like the Player for home and studio work, as it sounds a little cleaner and the guitar feels more finished. I recommend playing both, before deciding. Both are great guitars.

While I never preferred greenish colors nor have tried a MIM player I am biased towards the HW1 as I bought mine new in '02. I did eventually swap out the pickguard with a preloaded one with Lace Hot Golds and put the HW1 p'ups/electronics in my '89 MIK strat; both were transformed for the better at least to my ears.

The HW1 is a great guitar for me, on the other hand my MIK strat's neck is more comfortable to play. It all depends on which one feels/sounds best to you. If you have the option hook both up to the same amp and settings then try them; your ears and hands will tell you.
    Good luck.

    Thank you all!

I will visit again this weekend and hopefully the guitar's still in shop.

By the way, were these really assembled in U.S. and shipped to Mexico for Nitro paint?

Another vote for the Highway 1. The small headstock examples are still sought after and not super easy to find - especially in that condition. And at $650?...

What store did you say that was at?

Same tuners on each, sounds like a different problem if it wont stay in tune.

I wouldn't take an Ultra or even a Lester for my 02 H1. Nerp. I also have an 09 Am Dlx SCN S-1 that is versatile as hell among others.. BUT.. I wouldn't trade my H1 for any guitar or money.... Plays and sounds that good... Planets lined up on that guitar...

The Highway 1s are great. I know color matters but honestly I’d go Highway 1 over color.
