Can't go wrong with either ..................... but, I would think the Katana has the edge when it comes to adjustability. That said, the Katana really needs to be used with a computer interface IMO.

The X2 should be way simpler to dial in.

I'd go for the Katana. Mine does everything I need to do and is only hooked up to my computer when I'm recording or need something really special.

If the kid isn't adverse to computers, get him the Katana.

He is 17. I think he is pretty comfy with tech in general.

I have both the SCx2 and the Katana 50 ... dude, I could not cast a vote!! I like them both a ton -- so much that I would be fine having either one of them. The only real difference (for me at least) is that the Katana50 does great at really low volumes ... can't really do that w the SCx2 - its gotta be a certain volume at least before the tone really opens up

What music does he play? If he plays clean to light crunch most of the time. The SCX2 hands down. Nothing beats the clean. If he has a wider taste and likes more high gain sounds, the Katana. The SCX2 cannot do high gain, and struggles with crunch at low volume without the help of a pedal.

I use the SCX2 on the clean channel exclusively with a pedal collection. It is great once you can open it up to 4-5. Everything else (really low volume playing or anything higher gain - I use the Katana

He is a beginner. His favorite band is the Eagles. I have an XD and everything but modern gain tones is outstanding. Can the X2 be that much worse?

Edit: I just re read your post. We seem to be on the same page.

Im leaning towards Katana cause 12"combo and more bells and whistles.

Will check out the cleans and lower gain crunch tones some more.

I gave him a blues driver and easily can get him a sd1 too.

Have you used the sneaky amps for cleans? There are some really good clean tones on there.

Right now my go-to tone is a Vox AC30 Top Boost tone on the katana, when I don't use that I run a Fender Twin Reverb style both on the Sneaky Amps set.

You wont need to get him any of those pedals if you get the katana, but I would suggest getting the GA-FC to run the pedals on the Katana.

The GA-FC (channel/effects foot switch) only works on the Katana 100 combo/head.

I will say the Katana is outstanding for cleans to light drive level at any volume. I use pedals to get medium drive tones from it.

Then get the 100 Combo or head instead. The GA-FC is really a great tool that opens up the abilities of the amp. I have the head so I didn't realize you couldn't use it on the 50.

You can use a simple no-brand footswitch to toggle the two channels on the 50.

Gotcha, maybe look to see if you can get a demo, or a discount on the head or the 100 if you can. They are really that much better if you can't use the GA-FC. I can't speak to the 50, but the 100w head has been incredible, and I am gigging with it through a mojotone 1x12 cab with a Celestion V30 and it kicks ass.

The Katana 50 has 4 channels with the latest software, but a cheap double latching footswitch switches between the two banks of two channels. It isn't an abosulte must for a beginner and won't break the budget.
