Electric guitars can also be played with headphones so you can hear it but it won't bother other people around you too much.

Maybe you're right about the harm thing, but there are people on softball leagues who faithfully go to every practice game and every tournament game, and it takes up all their free time. Same with bowling, etc.. How about golf widows? I've been into golf and guarantee it can be addictive. It's hard to have sympathy for someone who becomes obsessed with any game, or any parent who allows his/her kids to spend too much time in front of screens.

It's good to have hobbies or other things you enjoy doing. I suppose there's a point where it can become an obsession.

Any app or software that gives you a reward - level up! achievement unlocked! new badge! High score! Quest complete! Target hit! Someone likes your post! Time extended! New follower! You ticked off all your tasks! Calories burned! Distance run! - is using exactly the same principles.

The purest most addictive most amoral example of this stuff is of course Facebook. They’re not getting sued though, because the lawyers know Facebook would destroy them and their firms and their personal lives.

Right. 10 years ago my kids were introduced to Minecraft. As time went on they really got into it, and it became obvious that they were going to spend all their free time with it if we let them. We made a rule that they could play video games one hour per day, and there was no more problem.

Whatever happened to personal responsibility and accountability? Anytime someone makes a decision to do something, like play Fortnite, it’s voluntary. Just because it’s become habit or a vice and they’ve found themselves in financial and/or social ruin doesn’t mean their decisions are suddenly involuntary or forced and worthy of litigation.

I think of most games as they are done today anyway as participatory cinema. I honestly don't believe there is a difference in the good feeling you get from a film, from the same feeling derived from gameplay. Full disclosure I earn my modest meat as a subcontractor making things for games, so I have my bias.

That said here is some gameplay from a game for which I made some assets (medieval cottages, props & etc) a couple years ago (my fave period and genre). This guy hails from Canada I believe and it was a kick to watch him play through the game for me. The dude is hilarious to me.

I'm an Overwatch player too. I've been playing video games for most of my life (started at around 11, am 44 now) and I don't plan on quitting anytime soon. OW is fantastically done IMO. Hit me up if you ever want to group up.

Yeah I hear ya. I will say though that some games can get mighty addicting. WOW was a hard habit to break and is especially tempting now that WOW Classic is out. But I will resist. There have been many others over the years but I have learned to take them in small doses.

If you can sue because the game is too good, can you also sue if it sucks?

Ironic that this is being debated on an internet forum and many of us have thousands of posts here.

There's a lot of marketing psychologist making money off this stuff, Facebook (and a lot of others) hired them "how do we make it addictive" sure not in so many words, but that's what they were after, an irresistible product.

So if Facebook and Twitter are addictive you can bet video games can be.

If you added up all the hours I spent playing Quake from the late 90's right up to today, I wager it's more than enough to learn a foreign language or get a masters degree.

My kids have an xbox and Wii. They play Minecraft, Rainbow 6, etc...

We put limits and restrictions on their game play: Homework done? Music practice done? chores done? Do your reading? Spent time with the fam to just talk? Ok, you've got X amount of time on the xbox.

We try to set up good behaviors and prioritization skills so when they get older, they can makes these balanced choices on their own. Also teach them to be accountable for their own choices and actions.

Yes, I think games can be addictive, but PARENTS of kids, and adult gamers (themselves) need to shoulder the responsibility and hold themselves accountable for the choices they make.
