The only way to be sure is to find a cavity route and see how deep the flame maple cap goes or does not go.

That and all foto flame tops are exactly the same pattern.

If it is a complete guitar you can look for the hamburgler on the back of the neck.

I beg to differ. Yes, the necks may be the same, but look at the photos on this thread. They are certainly not the same patten.

I would say that the quick, obvious way to spot one, is the fact that the finish is rather susceptible to climate change and cracks/de-laminates easily. It's a challenge to find them without this trait.
If you find one in great condition however, my opinion is that most people that have never heard of a 'Foto Flame', would have a difficult time telling the difference. I see no pixelation on mine.... at all.

Bought mine new in 1996. It's starting to crack in the clear coat mostly on the back, but I kind of like the way she is aging! Mine came new with a pearloid pick guard. I replaced the pickups with a Seymour Duncan JB Jr in the bridge, and Fender Texas Specials in the middle and neck positions. I totally love this guitar.

All of them do not have the film on the neck, some are actually quite rare and valuable.

The s/n is usually located on the back of the neck right near where it attaches to the body. At least that's where mine is.... No foto on my neck.

    Here's Mine

    Hello All,

New to the forum, and just bought a foto flame. It's in the mail, and I should get it this week .. excited to see it in person. I wasn't really in the market for another Strat, but I couldn't really resist this one!

Probably going to replace the pickups w/ Lace Holy Grails. Not sure what to expect out of the factory pups if anyone can comment.

Ahh, I remember this thread. I posted that I would be a member one day, and now I am!

Here's my 1996 Foto Flame. I added the black pick guard and the SD Little '59 in the bridge.
