    Hi, @StratocasterBlues

Maybe you and fiancee could keep your savings accounts for hobbies/fun separate ?

Would it be good to do a careful conversation about hobbies & finances before ?

Because I work, pay bills & I wanna new Strat.

It's easier if you are ok with buying used guitars & you aren't foolish about it. If you buy an already deprecated guitar then at will you can get your money (or close to it) back. Can't do that with shoes.

Consider those guitars "money on the wall".

    .

    "How many shoes you got?"
    "Those shoes cost how much?"
"Shoes" can be whatever is being collected on the other side of the closet.

If you are searching for solutions to "before I get married" then you need to watch a bunch of videos here. She will be owner to half of those guitars.

+1 that sums up how it works in my house. My wife can certainly buy anything she wants as far as I am concerned

The interest in collecting multiple guitars is understandable, but if that same person can only play them mediocre to average, then I soon become proportionately less impressed...

Oh come on, man! The next one will definitely make me a better player. I'm sure of it! ;)

All kidding aside: I like playing different guitars, even if it is mediocre to average (whatever that is). My guitar 'collection' is not meant to impress anyone, it's meant be enjoyed by me. Anything else is a bonus.

To each their own of course. I just find playing to be far more rewarding.

I too went through a GAS phase at one point but eventually found that collecting (and upgrading and personalizing and maintaining) guitars ultimately ended up being considerably more distracting than I ever anticipated and profoundly less fulfilling than playing them.

Sure, I’ve bought and sold quite a few guitars in my day, but once I narrowed down the “best of the best”, now I can just concentrate on why I fell in love with the guitar in the first place...

Refrets are expensive, so you need multiple guitars to minimize fretwear.

Wood combinations. Finishes. Electronics can be swapped pretty easily. That’s about it in my estimation.

I got 12 strats. My excuse was i wanted to try more pickups and two that there's more colors i wanted to have. I have all the plain must have colors.... Olympic white black and sunburst. But i also wanted the very rare colors most ppl do not have.... Aztec/ shoreline gold, Sherwood green, Inca silver, burgundy mist and shell pink.

Only one i want still is a sonic blue probably in a maple neck because i have 9 rosewood to my 3 maples. Plus i got 2 more spaces for guitars in my rack so i want it to be full lol.

First you need to make sure that you have a joint bank account where you both contribute an agreed sum of money, and where all the household expenses, including food, are paid from.

Then you each need to have your own independent personal bank account that you manage as you always have done. This way your future wife can buy whatever she likes whenever she likes without having to seek your approval, and in return you can do the same.

So as long as you have enough space, you can buy as many guitars as you like.

    It works.

What, no "pearls of wisdom" or "voice of reason" in all that douche-baggery b.s.?

I see no negativity or condescension in pointing out the obvious: Both collecting and playing guitar requires a substantial investment (one way or another), with inevitable trade-offs at some point. It’s your time and/or money, spend it or waste it however you please.

I realize the OP was looking for a fun way to justify his GAS, but if it bankrupts the household or causes a marital rift, then those consequences must be considered as well - and I'm not about to support someone entering into marriage with a flawed mindset.

Sorry for not providing the cotton candy view that everyone was probably expecting...

I married someone who makes about what I do. We don't have any kids. She doesn't even ask about my purchase history. So I don't have this problem.

However, I would suggest, if you can afford it, that you have personal money in your budget that you each can spend without scrutiny, and without detracting from your long term shared goals.

And don't buy on credit cards.

I might also suggest remaining single where no excuses are required. ;)
