When I hear artists like Polyphia or Animals as Leaders or Tosin Abasi I can’t hit the skip button quick enough…

Yes, it’s technical.
Yes, it’s hard.
No, I can’t do it.
“Technically sound” doesn’t mean “sounds good.”

I’m reminded of what Truman Capote said about Jack Kerouac’s stream-of-consciousness technique and style of composition:
“That's not writing, that's typing.”

All the bands I mentioned above are not playing music. They’re typing—at best, it’s Typewriter Rock.

Meh.
Huge piles of Meh.

I'm not a fan of show-off shredding, particularly when it's really repetitive. I can't play like Yngwie and I don't want to--I think his music is boring.

I also really don't like the high pitched squealy noises Tom Morello gets out of his whammy pedal. I LOVE his playing otherwise, but some of that stuff is really uncomfortable for me.
We call those guys ‘Whanky Noodle Dandy’s’

How do you know that a person is "showing off?" Was Coltrane "showing off" on My Favorite Things or was he playing what he felt? The idea that someone with chops and letting it fly is not an exploration of the music does not seem warranted.

Your subjective feelings are not just your feelings but are actual factual truths?? That's really interesting. Backing it up by quoting the subjective stuff from Capote is just....more of the same nonsense.

I don't like extented guitar solos that destroy a great song.
On the other side there are solos that make the whole song great, because the song is **** but the solo is great.
Some great songs don't even need a solo at all.
Wow, did I really wrote that?
Yes, but many times I love to play just the rhythm guitar, because on so many songs people remember the rhythm guitar riff only.
I did not posted any songs because it is personal taste, I think.

Peace,
Robin

I like phrasing. Spaces around notes. On the other hand, I also like overdubs. There can be room for flash, character, and layers, as long as there are still open spaces--even if brief. Think for instance of the Beck Ola album. Tons of flash but there's also loads of character and pauses.

I remember when GIT (Guitar Institute of Technology) opened in Hollywood in 1977. I absolutely loathed the idea of all these fledgling guitarists studying how to perfectly shred at the speed of light. It was just a personal bias for me because I thought it lacked soul. In truth, there were some good guitarists that came out of that GIT school of thought. But I have always preferred a few dirty edges, no matter how proficient a player is.

I stated my opinion and my reaction to a particular kind of music.

Opinions and reactions are (by definition) subjective.

I never stated it was fact.

The Capote quote was to more eloquently expound upon my disdain for this type of music.

So since you don’t seem to understand my post, does that mean your reply is nonsense?

Or did you just lash out because I insulted something you like?

Having chops is fine, but it is not the same thing as good composition, nor is it the same thing as serving the song. Coltrane's playing in My Favorite Things is composed and mostly in service of the song. IMO it gets a bit wanky and show-off towards the end, but what he's doing is not only fast, but interesting.

Malsteen, I don't care how fast he's playing, his playing doesn't say anything. It's boring.

You are the one with the problem. You typed this:

All the bands I mentioned above are not playing music. They’re typing—at best, it’s Typewriter Rock.

So, your declaration does not infer that you are stating a fact??? At least own it.

I’ll own the fact that you don’t seem to know the difference between a statement of opinion and a statement of fact.

I’ll own the fact that I don’t like those bands and I said my OPINION in a declarative statement.

I’ll own the fact that you possibly have poor reading comprehension and a poor understanding of communicating with the written English language.

I’ll own the fact that I don’t understand what your problem with my opinion actually is. (Yes, I ended a sentence with a preposition)

I’ll own the fact that you might soon be the first person on this website that I’ve ever put on “Ignore”.

I stated my opinion.
I declared my opinion.
There is one fact in my opinion: I don’t like that kind of music, which I (and others) call “Typewriter Rock.”

Sorry if I gored your sacred ox.
You’ll get over it.
I did.

Have a great day.

Kudos to the OP for stirring up debate. I think most of the people on ST are highly opinionated. That's a good thing IMO. It gets to the heart of this thread. Imagine a world without opinionated musicians, ha!

I don't think it's a good thing at all. It's mostly self serving nonsense. It's about on the level of non classical musicians claiming that classical musicians are "soulless." Works to rehash the old "soul vs. technique" silliness.
